Canberra's public transport system is about to get a significant security upgrade with the deployment of dedicated transit officers across the network. The ACT Government is taking a firm stance against fare evasion and anti-social behaviour, with new officers hitting the streets to ensure everyone pays their way and travels safely.
The initiative comes as Transport Minister Chris Steel revealed concerning statistics about revenue loss. "We know that the vast majority of Canberrans are doing the right thing, but there is a small minority who aren't," Minister Steel stated. "This isn't just about revenue protection - it's about creating a safer, more secure public transport environment for all passengers."
What the New Transit Officers Will Do
The specially trained officers will have broad authority to:
- Check MyWay cards and tickets for valid fare payment
- Issue infringement notices to fare evaders
- Respond to anti-social behaviour and security incidents
- Work alongside existing transport security personnel
- Provide assistance and information to passengers
Tackling the Fare Evasion Problem
While the government hasn't disclosed exact figures on revenue loss from fare evasion, Minister Steel acknowledged it represents "a significant cost to the taxpayer." The new measures aim to level the playing field for the majority of commuters who regularly pay their fares.
"When people don't pay their fare, it's not a victimless crime," Steel emphasised. "It means less revenue to invest back into our public transport system, which ultimately affects service quality for everyone."
A Multi-Pronged Approach to Transport Safety
The transit officer program complements other security measures already in place, including CCTV cameras on buses and at transport interchanges. The government is taking a comprehensive approach to ensure Canberra's public transport remains among the safest in Australia.
Regular commuters have welcomed the announcement, with many expressing hope that the increased presence will deter problematic behaviour and make their daily travel more pleasant and secure.
