Three Teenage Boys Arrested Following High-Speed Police Pursuit Across Melbourne
Three teenage boys have been apprehended by authorities after a wild police chase that unfolded across Melbourne's southeastern suburbs, with the stolen vehicle allegedly reaching staggering speeds of 190 kilometres per hour. The dramatic incident began in the early hours of Monday morning, sparking a multi-agency response that involved aerial surveillance and canine units.
Home Invasion Precedes High-Speed Chase
The sequence of events commenced around 1:55 AM in the suburb of Ashwood, where the trio allegedly forced entry into a residential property on Ashwood Drive. The homeowners were asleep at the time but were awakened by suspicious noises emanating from within their residence.
"I tried to have a very quick look to the corridor, and I see two guys in the corridor," one victim recounted to news outlets. "I saw them, but I don't think they saw me, so I think they were distracted by the dog."
Despite the presence of the family dog, the alleged intruders proceeded to locate and steal the keys to the homeowners' white Audi A1 sedan before making their escape from the property. The vehicle theft set the stage for what would become an intense police pursuit across metropolitan Melbourne.
Dramatic Police Pursuit Reaches Extreme Speeds
Law enforcement officers spotted the stolen Audi shortly after the home invasion and initiated a pursuit that quickly escalated in intensity. The Victoria Police Air Wing unit was deployed to track the vehicle from above as it traveled along the Monash Freeway.
During the chase, the stolen car allegedly reached speeds approaching 190 kilometres per hour, creating dangerous conditions on the roadway. Police attempted to deploy stop sticks near the Heatherton Road exit of the Monash Freeway in an effort to disable the vehicle, but the Audi continued onward despite these measures.
The pursuit continued along the Princes Highway before the stolen vehicle was ultimately abandoned in the suburb of Narre Warren. At this point, the occupants fled the scene on foot, prompting an extensive ground search by responding officers.
Arrests Made Following Intensive Search Operation
A 16-year-old boy and two 17-year-old boys, all hailing from the Cardinia region, were subsequently arrested on Strawbent Rise where they were discovered hiding near residential properties. The apprehension was not without incident, as the 16-year-old sustained a bite from a police dog during the arrest process.
The injured teenager was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, where he remains under police guard while receiving care for his injuries. Local residents described chaotic scenes as law enforcement closed in on the suspects.
"Last night, my gosh, it was so noisy. The helicopters were around, and then about 10 minutes later, well, not even 10 minutes, maybe three minutes later, we hear the canine unit," one neighbor reported. "All I heard was, 'stop running, get to the ground', and then looked out. Right, let's go see what's going on out there."
Charges Filed as Investigation Continues
Following their apprehension, formal charges have been filed against the two 17-year-old suspects. One teenager faces charges including home invasion, theft of a motor vehicle, theft, and committing an indictable offence while on bail. The other 17-year-old has been charged with home invasion, theft of a motor vehicle, and theft.
Both older teenagers have been remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear before a children's court to answer the allegations against them. Police authorities have indicated that investigations remain ongoing into the full circumstances surrounding the incidents.
"Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of the incidents, and whether more offenders were involved in the aggravated burglary," a police spokesperson confirmed. The statement suggests that law enforcement is exploring the possibility of additional individuals being connected to the home invasion that precipitated the dramatic police chase.
