Socceroos' World Cup Hopes Dealt Blow in 2-0 Loss to USA
Socceroos Lose 2-0 to USA in World Cup Clash

The Socceroos' World Cup campaign has suffered a major setback, as they were overpowered by the United States 2-0 at Seattle Stadium on Saturday morning Australian time.

After an electrifying victory over Turkey, the Australian side failed to replicate that form and started nervously against the hosts. They trailed 2-0 at halftime, and the USA held on to secure the win.

Defensive Struggles Exposed

Unlike the match against Turkey, the Socceroos appeared disorganized in defense during the first half, lacking cohesion and connection. Australian legend Harry Kewell did not hold back in his criticism at halftime.

"It's not good enough," Kewell said. "It feels like we've frozen on the big stage. There's no fluidity. We're on the back foot. We're not connecting one or two passes. The USA have obviously looked at how we've played. They've changed slightly the formation, and that's just locked us in, and then we look panicky on the ball."

"We're just getting the ball and kicking it long. They've put us on the back foot and been able to connect in the wide areas and make us look terrible."

Boateng Baffled by Defensive Lapses

Fellow SBS commentator Kevin-Prince Boateng was equally perplexed by the defensive gaps, questioning how the USA had so many free players.

"How is that possible? They come in as a defensive side, and the defence must be the strongest. How can they be so free? I don't understand. I said from the beginning, they will need fireworks. I don't see any fireworks from the Socceroos. Something has to change."

Second Half Revival Not Enough

The Socceroos showed more life in the second half, creating some meaningful chances around the 60-minute mark, but they failed to find the back of the net. The defeat raises questions about manager Tony Popovic's decision to drop goalscorers Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe to the bench for the start of the match.

More details to come as the campaign continues.
