Veteran Sydney midfielder Taylor Adams has announced his immediate retirement from the AFL, ending a 15-year career that spanned 229 games across three clubs.
The 32-year-old informed his teammates on Monday that he is stepping away from the game effective immediately. Adams has not played at AFL level since Round 13 of last year due to ongoing injury struggles and form issues, but he finishes his career as an All-Australian and the recipient of Collingwood's best and fairest award in 2020.
Adams Reflects on His Journey
"I’m incredibly grateful to all three clubs I have played for and to have had an amazing football journey," Adams told the Swans' website. "It was always a dream of mine to play at the highest level, so to have played AFL for well over a decade is something I should be really proud of."
Adams began his career at the GWS Giants before moving to Collingwood, where he became a key midfielder and earned All-Australian honours. He was traded to Sydney ahead of the 2024 season after being ruled out of Collingwood's 2023 premiership run due to a hamstring injury suffered in the qualifying final. The injury prevented him from playing in the preliminary final and grand final, where the Magpies defeated Brisbane by four points.
A Career of Resilience
One of the enduring images of the 2023 grand final was Adams embracing Magpies skipper Darcy Moore in an emotional moment after the victory. Adams played 19 games in his first season with the Swans but managed only four last year and has not featured in 2026.
Sydney football boss Leon Cameron, who previously coached Adams at the Giants, praised his professionalism and work ethic. "Taylor has been known around the league as one of the hardest working players in the competition for his entire career," Cameron said. "He’s had a unique footy journey which has taken him to three clubs but during that time he has been extremely professional and always got the best out of himself."
Legacy and Future
Adams expressed gratitude to all three clubs and the staff who supported him throughout his career. "To the Giants, Pies and now the Swans, I want to say thank you to all three clubs and to all of the staff involved in my career along the way. It’s been a great journey but I’m now ready for another chapter," he said.
Cameron added: "I wish Taylor and his young family all the very best for whatever comes next, he will always be welcome at the Swans."
