The Carolina Hurricanes clinched their second Stanley Cup championship in franchise history on Sunday night, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 at PNC Arena. The victory marked the Hurricanes' first title since 2006, ending a 20-year drought.
Defensive Masterclass Seals the Win
Brandon Bussi, who entered the series late in Game 3 and helped turn the tide for Carolina, recorded his first career playoff shutout with 22 saves. The Hurricanes' suffocating defense stifled the Golden Knights, limiting them to just 18:37 without a shot on goal during the second and third periods.
Jackson Blake contributed a goal and an assist, while Taylor Hall opened the scoring at 3:47 of the first period. Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-net goal to seal the victory.
Vegas Struggles Offensively
The Golden Knights, making an unlikely run to the final, were shut out for the first time in their three Stanley Cup Final appearances. Carter Hart made 20 saves but allowed fewer than four goals for the first time in the series.
Vegas made several lineup changes for the do-or-die game, including Brett Howden replacing the injured William Karlsson at second-line center. Reilly Smith made his Cup debut at third-line right wing, and Braeden Bowman made his playoff debut at fourth-line right wing. Kaedan Korczak replaced Dylan Coghlan on the third defensive pairing.
Series Turnaround
The Hurricanes took control of the series after falling behind 4-0 in Game 3. Though they lost that game in overtime, they outplayed the Golden Knights for the remainder of the series, winning three straight games.
Coach Rod Brind'Amour, who captained the Hurricanes to their 2006 title, led the team to this championship. The series featured dramatic momentum swings and spectacular offense in the early games, but Game 6 showcased the defensive prowess many had expected.
