Perry Inspires Australia to T20 World Cup Semi-Final

Ellyse Perry has once again demonstrated her legendary status in women's cricket, inspiring Australia to a commanding six-wicket victory over India at Lord's, securing their place in the T20 World Cup semi-finals. The 35-year-old allrounder, widely regarded as the greatest of all time, scored a brilliant 56 off 38 balls, sharing a 100-run partnership with Ash Gardner, who remained unbeaten on 53. Australia's successful chase of 171 was the highest in the tournament's history.

Record Chase and Semi-Final Berth

Australia's fifth consecutive win sets up a semi-final clash against the West Indies at the Oval on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST). The victory was particularly sweet as it avenged last year's ODI World Cup semi-final loss to India. Captain Sophie Molineux praised Perry's leadership: "Pez brought them in, and said 170 is very, very gettable. And her actions spoke louder than words as she just led from the front."

India's Strong Start

India posted a formidable 4-170, largely thanks to captain Harmanpreet Kaur's explosive 56 off 27 balls, including three consecutive sixes in the final over. A record crowd of 27,163, including Indian legend Virat Kohli, witnessed the match. However, Australia's fielding was ragged, with Nicola Carey, Georgia Wareham, and Phoebe Litchfield dropping catches as India scored 38 runs in the last two overs.

Perry and Gardner Shine

In reply, Beth Mooney scored 22 off 20 balls and Litchfield 24 off 25 before Perry took charge. She hit eight boundaries in her 56, while Gardner smashed three sixes and three fours in her unbeaten 53. Georgia Wareham hit the winning boundary with an over to spare, taking Australia to 4-172.

South Africa's Relief

India's defeat meant South Africa, who earlier beat Bangladesh by four wickets, advanced to the semi-finals. South African captain Laura Wolvaardt admitted: "I never thought I'd be supporting the Aussies — but go Aussies!" South Africa will face unbeaten hosts England in the other semi-final on Thursday (Friday AEST).

Looking Ahead

Australia now face a quick two-day turnaround but are strong favorites against the West Indies, whom they defeated in a warm-up match in Cardiff. A spot in the final at Lord's next Sunday awaits the winner.
