Queensland pacer Xavier Bartlett has downplayed his chances of an Ashes call-up but endorsed veteran teammate Michael Neser after the pair impressed against Western Australia at the WACA on Wednesday.
With New South Wales quick Sean Abbott ruled out of the first Test against England due to a hamstring injury, a backup bowling spot in Perth is open. Bartlett and Neser, already in Western Australia, could be easy options for selectors.
Both bowled miserly spells on a lifeless wicket, with Neser taking 1-37 and Bartlett 0-45 as Western Australia slipped from 2-179 to 5-210. Bartlett, playing his first Sheffield Shield game in months, said he aims to do a job for Queensland.
Bartlett praised Neser as an amazing bowler and integral to the team, noting his previous Test experience. He added that if Neser gets the opportunity, he will take it with both hands.
Bartlett also looked ahead to facing all-rounder Cam Green, who is set to play for Australia in the Ashes. He emphasized the need to bowl in the right areas to get Green out early.
