A revamped England cricket team, featuring several new faces, made a strong start to their Test series against New Zealand in Christchurch, with debutant Jacob Bethell striking twice to keep the hosts in check on the opening day.
Bethell Shines on Debut
The 22-year-old left-arm spinner, playing his first Test match, removed both New Zealand openers to leave the home side at 67 for 2 at lunch. Bethell, who was called up after injuries to several senior players, finished the session with figures of 2 for 17 from eight overs.
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl first on a green-tinged pitch at Hagley Oval. The decision paid immediate dividends as Bethell struck in his first over, trapping Devon Conway leg before wicket for 12. He then claimed the wicket of Tom Latham, caught behind for 24, to leave New Zealand reeling.
New-Look England Impress
England's attack, missing several first-choice bowlers due to injury and rotation, performed admirably. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson also impressed, bowling with good pace and accuracy to keep the New Zealand batsmen under pressure.
At the break, Kane Williamson was unbeaten on 18, with Daryl Mitchell on 9. The pair will look to rebuild the innings in the afternoon session.
England's batting lineup also has a new look, with opener Ben Duckett and number three Ollie Pope both playing their first Tests in over a year. The tourists will be hoping their bowlers can continue to make inroads and set up a manageable chase.
