Côte d'Ivoire have qualified for the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time in their history, courtesy of a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Curaçao in Philadelphia. Nicolas Pépé scored twice, once in each half, to secure the win that placed the Ivorians as group runners-up.
Historic Achievement for the Elephants
The Ivorians had previously participated in three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014) but never advanced beyond the group stage. This breakthrough comes in the expanded 48-team tournament, which allocated 10 spots to Africa—double the five from 2022. Côte d'Ivoire went undefeated in qualifying, winning eight of ten matches and conceding no goals.
“It's a proud moment for the nation,” said coach Jean-Louis Gasset. “We have worked hard to get here, and the players deserve this.”
Match Overview
The game began brightly for Côte d'Ivoire when a defensive error by Curaçao's Juriën Gaari and Joshua Brenet allowed Yan Diomande to steal the ball and set up Pépé for an easy finish in the seventh minute. Despite dominating possession, Curaçao created few clear chances, with Tahith Chong and Leandro Bacuna threatening sporadically.
In the second half, Curaçao pushed forward but lacked a clinical striker. Côte d'Ivoire sealed the win in the 64th minute when Ibrahim Sangaré played Pépé through on goal, and the former Arsenal winger fired past Eloy Room.
Impact of World Cup Expansion
The expanded format has given opportunities to nations like Côte d'Ivoire, which previously struggled to qualify from Africa's limited slots. The Ivorians had reached the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals five times in the last two decades but only made three World Cups before 2026. Now, with nine direct qualifiers from Africa, they have finally broken through.
Curaçao, making their World Cup debut, exit after scoring just one goal in three matches. However, they conceded only twice in their final two games, showing defensive resilience. “We gave everything,” said coach Dick Advocaat. “It's a learning experience for our players.”
Group Stage Journey
Côte d'Ivoire's tournament had been tense. A 90th-minute winner from Amad Diallo earned them three points against Ecuador, while a 94th-minute goal by Germany's Deniz Undav denied them a point. The win over Curaçao ensured their place in the last 32.
Despite the victory, the Ivorians were criticized for not pressing their advantage, allowing Curaçao to dominate possession at times. Still, the result stands as a milestone for a nation that has produced stars like Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré.
