Australia Through to Knockout Stages
A dramatic 2-2 draw between Ecuador and Senegal on Thursday has sent Australia through to the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The result in Group A means the Socceroos finish second in the group behind Ecuador, who top the group with five points. Australia have four points, while Senegal are eliminated with two points.
How the Draw Unfolded
Ecuador took the lead through Enner Valencia in the 28th minute, but Senegal equalised through Boulaye Dia just after the hour mark. Ecuador regained the lead through Valencia again in the 73rd minute, only for Senegal to equalise again through Sadio Mané in the 86th minute. The draw was enough for Ecuador to top the group and for Australia to advance.
Socceroos' Reaction
Australia coach Graham Arnold said: "It's an incredible feeling. The boys have worked so hard, and to see them rewarded with a place in the knockout stages is amazing. We knew we had a chance, and we took it." Captain Mathew Ryan added: "We believed in ourselves, and now we're through. We'll enjoy this moment, but we know there's more work to do."
Group A Final Standings
Ecuador finish top with five points, Australia second with four, Senegal third with two, and the Netherlands bottom with one point. The Socceroos will now face the runners-up of Group B in the round of 16.
