Switzerland Beat Canada 2-1 to Top Group B, End Hosts' Vancouver Run

Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1 at BC Place in Vancouver on Wednesday to secure top spot in Group B and end Canada's home World Cup campaign. The Swiss will now play their round of 32 match in Vancouver on 2 July, while Canada must travel to California as group runners-up.

Clinical Second-Half Burst Decides Tight Contest

After a tense first half that saw few clear chances, Switzerland struck twice in 12 minutes early in the second period. Rubén Vargas opened the scoring 40 seconds after the restart, finishing from Johan Manzambi's cross. Manzambi then doubled the lead in the 57th minute after defensive errors from Canada's Derek Cornelius and Luc de Fougerolles allowed Breel Embolo to set him up.

Canada's Late Rally Falls Short

Canada substitute Promise David pulled one back in the 76th minute, volleying home after a wonderful touch and cross from Nathan Saliba. Despite a frantic finish, Canada could not find an equaliser. The result means Canada finish second in Group B and will face the runner-up from Group A, likely South Korea, in the round of 32.

Injury Blow for Canada

Canada were without midfielders Ismaël Koné and Stephen Eustáquio from the start. Koné, who suffered a broken leg six days earlier, was wheeled pitchside on crutches to a huge ovation. Eustáquio was not fit enough to start and was introduced as a substitute in the second half. Coach Jesse Marsch started Nathan Saliba and Mathieu Choinière in midfield, but they struggled to contain Switzerland's Granit Xhaka.

Switzerland's Tactical Changes Pay Off

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin made four changes to his lineup, handing starts to Manzambi and Vargas. The changes proved decisive, with both goalscorers justifying their selection. Switzerland will now aim to end a run of seven consecutive defeats in World Cup knockout matches.

Atmosphere and Key Moments

The closed roof at BC Place created a humid and electric atmosphere for the midday kick-off. Canada's best chance of the first half came from Ali Ahmed, whose shot was saved by Gregor Kobel. In the second half, Nico Elvedi made a heroic block to deny Jonathan David before Promise David's goal set up a tense finale.
