World Cup live site moved after restaurant complaints
The planned World Cup live site at Garema Place in Canberra has been abruptly relocated following objections from the upscale restaurant Armani La Vella. The decision, announced late Friday, came after the restaurant argued that the event would disrupt its outdoor dining and cause excessive noise.
Armani La Vella's objections lead to backflip
According to a spokesperson for the ACT government, the original site was chosen to host the live screening of the FIFA World Cup matches. However, Armani La Vella, which operates a popular alfresco dining area in the square, raised concerns about the impact on its business. The restaurant claimed the event would block access and create an unsuitable environment for diners.
"We understand the excitement around the World Cup, but the proposed setup would have severely affected our operations," said a representative from Armani La Vella. "We are pleased that the government listened to our concerns and found an alternative location."
New location announced
The live site has now been moved to Civic Square, just a short walk from Garema Place. The new venue will feature a large screen, seating, and food stalls. The ACT government confirmed that all scheduled events will proceed as planned, with no changes to the program.
"The decision to relocate was made to balance the needs of local businesses and the community's desire to enjoy the World Cup," said a government spokesperson. "We believe Civic Square offers a better setting for the event."
Community reaction
Some residents expressed disappointment at the last-minute change, but others supported the move. "It's a shame we couldn't have it in Garema Place, but I understand the restaurant's point of view," said local resident Sarah Thompson. "Civic Square is also a good spot."
The World Cup live site will operate from November 20 to December 18, 2022, with matches broadcast daily. The event is expected to attract thousands of football fans.
