Matildas vs Mexico: First Friendly Live from Newcastle

Martin Pegan here. Welcome to live coverage of the first women's football friendly between Australia and Mexico at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle. This is the first of two matches in the series as the Matildas and El Tri Femenil aim to build momentum for the 2027 Women's World Cup.

Matildas Return to Home Soil

The Matildas are back in Australia for their first home game since reaching the Asian Cup final in March. The continental runners-up quickly put their heartbreaking defeat to Japan behind them with two convincing wins in the Fifa Series in Kenya, turning their attention to the global showpiece in Brazil next year.

Mexico in Red-Hot Form

World No. 28 Mexico represent a significant step up in the Matildas' preparations. Australia are ranked 15th, 13 places above Mexico, but their opponents are unbeaten in nine matches, including a 1-0 victory over 2027 World Cup hosts Brazil in March.

Australia hold a dominant 10-1 win-loss record over Mexico, most recently a 2-0 friendly triumph two years ago. However, a tighter contest is expected tonight at a sold-out McDonald Jones Stadium.

Kick-off is at 7.15pm AEST. I will be back shortly with line-ups and team news. In the meantime, send your questions, thoughts, and predictions via email or on X @martinpegan and Bluesky @martinpegan.bsky.social. Let us get into it!
