The New South Wales Blues have made a major selection call for the State of Origin decider, axing star winger Brian To'o and centre Kotoni Staggs from the starting side. In their place, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Stephen Crichton have been recalled to the lineup for the winner-takes-all clash at Suncorp Stadium.
Key Changes in the Backline
Suaalii, who missed Game II due to suspension, returns on the wing, while Crichton slots into the centres, moving from his previous position on the wing. The reshuffle sees Josh Addo-Carr retain his spot on the other wing, and Tom Trbojevic shifts from centre to fullback, with James Tedesco dropped from the squad entirely.
According to sources close to the Blues camp, the decision to drop To'o and Staggs was made to inject more speed and defensive solidity into the backline. Suaalii's height and aerial ability are seen as key assets against Queensland's kicking game, while Crichton's experience and versatility are expected to shore up the centres.
Impact on Team Dynamics
To'o's omission is particularly surprising given his strong performances in the first two games, where he averaged over 150 running metres. However, the Blues coaching staff felt the need for a change after a narrow loss in Game II. Staggs, who scored a try in Game I, struggled with defensive lapses in the second match.
“It’s a tough call, but we believe this gives us the best chance to win the series,” said Blues coach Brad Fittler. “Brian and Kotoni have been great, but we need to adapt to the challenge.”
Maroons' Response
Queensland have named an unchanged lineup, with Daly Cherry-Evans leading the side. The Maroons are aiming for their third consecutive series win under coach Billy Slater. The decider promises to be a fierce encounter, with both teams desperate for victory.
The match will be played on July 13 at Suncorp Stadium, with kickoff at 7:55 pm AEST. The winner will claim the 2023 State of Origin series.
