Enthusiastic supporters say sardines can lower inflammation and cholesterol, boost gut health and immunity, and provide essential nutrients. But do the claims stack up? Dietitian Jemma O’Hanlon says this is one TikTok trend she can actually support.

The recommended dose is two to three serves once a week, though O’Hanlon emphasises variety is key. “You don’t just have to have sardines. We get a lot of nutrients when we eat a variety of protein sources, seafood, fish, but also our plant protein sources like nuts and legumes as well,” she said.

This isn’t the first time social media has sent shoppers into a frenzy. Earlier this year, cottage cheese and Greek yoghurt vanished from supermarket shelves after viral videos promoted their health benefits. Demand has already soared for sardines, with the tinned fish stripped from supermarket shelves.
