A Sydney mother has been sanctioned by a local rugby club after she ran onto the field during a junior game altercation, leaving witnesses stunned and divided.
The incident occurred during Eastwood's loss to Warringah at Epping Boys High School on Saturday, where the woman was seen walking onto the pitch near the halfway line and appeared to verbally confront at least one player. The physical scuffle had broken out near the sideline in front of the Warringah reserves bench.
First reported on 2GB, a witness named Kylie told host Ben Fordham: 'There was not much in it. Two players were going at it in back play. The game had moved further down the field and then the mum ran on, saying 'Get off my son'. And then all the Warringah players on the sideline started laughing because it was right in front of their bench.'
The woman, dressed in jeans and a pink top, walked into a melee involving up to ten players during the 74th minute of the Second Grade Colts competition. She appeared to address one larger player in particular before walking off, reportedly giving a spray to the Warringah reserves as she left.
Kylie said the woman remained on the sideline after the incident and refused to give her name to officials. 'It's embarrassing for him. For her. It's embarrassing for the club,' she said. 'If it was a dad running on it would be a whole different conversation. Nobody would think it was cute or a passionate mum.'
According to the station, the Sydney Rugby Union and Eastwood rugby club have sanctioned the woman. News.com.au has contacted the Eastwood District Rugby Union Club Football Club for comment.
Wallabies legend Nick Farr-Jones offered a contrasting view, joking that he would support his wife Angela if she ran onto the field to protect a family member. 'If my wife Angie jumped onto the field to protect one of my sons then good on her,' he said. 'Have a go.' He added that he loved 'passionate and protective mothers' and suggested a light penalty: 'She's in a spot of bother, but just give her a speeding fine and maybe one demerit point.'
The incident overshadowed a tough day for Eastwood in lower-tier competitions. The second-grade colts side lost 95-14, and the club also suffered defeats in first-grade colts and third-grade Henderson Shield. However, the premier Shute Shield team secured a big win, defeating ladder-leading Warringah 27-24.
