Veteran AFL Defender Steven May Announces Shock Retirement Days Before 2026 Season

The AFL career of veteran defender Steven May has come to a sensational and abrupt end, with the 34-year-old announcing his retirement just days before the start of the highly anticipated 2026 season. This sudden decision follows a tumultuous 12-month period that saw Melbourne Football Club ask him to find a new club and, more recently, police attending his residence.

Timing Coincides with Critical List Deadline

The announcement arrives as Monday's deadline for last-minute list additions via the Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) looms large, adding significant pressure to Melbourne's roster planning. In a heartfelt Instagram post, May expressed the difficulty of his decision, stating, "It's with a heavy heart that I've decided to step away and retire from the AFL. It's an incredibly tough decision to make on the eve of the season but I know it's the right one for myself, my family and the team."

Reflecting on a Dream Career from Darwin to Premiership Glory

May reflected on his journey, noting, "As a kid from Darwin, all I ever wanted was to play one game of AFL. To have lived that dream and had the career I've had is something I'll be forever grateful for." He extended gratitude to the Gold Coast Suns for giving him his initial opportunity in the inaugural season and to Melbourne Football Club for pursuing him, a move that culminated in premiership success. "It was a hard decision to leave my club but a decision that paid dividends and I'll forever be a premiership player for such a historic club," he added.

Legal and Personal Challenges Mark Recent Months

May was due to face Frankston Magistrates Court on February 20 regarding criminal charges from a brawl in Sorrento in late 2024, but the matter was "administratively adjourned without appearances." This retirement marks a staggering fall from grace for the defender, who arrived at Melbourne ahead of the 2019 season after serving as captain of the Gold Coast Suns. At Melbourne, he became a key figure in their drought-breaking premiership team in 2021 and earned All Australian honours in both 2021 and 2022.

Recent Absences and Team Dynamics

May was a notable absentee from a pre-season training session in early February, with it later revealed he was taking indefinite leave with no timeline for return. His career, which began with his AFL debut in 2011, included 123 games for the Suns and a total of 251 games overall. Last year, he was involved in a much-scrutinised on-field argument with captain Max Gawn after a narrow King's Birthday loss to Collingwood. In 2022, he hit headlines again and was sanctioned for a public brawl with teammate Jake Melksham at a venue in Prahran.

Captain's Support and Future Implications

Melbourne captain Max Gawn recently confirmed he had been checking in on May, stating, "I've reached out to him. We're in dialogue. I just make sure that he's healthy and well and he's away from the club at the moment." Gawn expressed hope that May would return to play at some point this year, but with May contracted until the season's end, his retirement leaves a significant void in the team's defensive lineup. May concluded his statement by wishing the club success, saying, "Right now the club, Kingy (new coach Steven King) and the boys deserve some clean air and no distractions moving forward, and I wish the lads nothing but success ahead. Very exciting times for our fans."
