Batting prospect Oliver Peake will get his chance while Liam Scott and Joel Davies have also bolted into the frame for Australia’s tour of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
With a host of headliners unavailable due to IPL commitments, the trio headline a new-look squad of 24 to play nine limited overs games from May 30.
Mitchell Marsh will captain all squads, with Australia to play three ODIs against Pakistan in Rawalpindi and Lahore before travelling to Bangladesh for three ODIs in Dhaka in the run-up to the T20 series.
With an eye to August’s two-Test home series against Bangladesh, front-line quicks Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc won’t feature after making injury returns in the IPL.
Instead, fast bowlers Spencer Johnson, who hasn’t played for almost a year due to back stress fractures, Riley Meredith and Billy Stanlake are all set for international returns.
Tasmania’s Meredith and Stanlake have been included for the Pakistan ODIs, with Johnson picked in the T20 squad alongside Meredith.
Glenn Maxwell has not been included in the T20 squad, the veteran instead playing the entire US Major League Cricket campaign for Washington with Steve Smith.
Smith was a late call-up to the World Cup earlier this year but, along with fellow Major League-bound batters Marcus Stoinis and Matt Short, won’t feature in the Bangladesh T20s.
Travis Head, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis will miss the Pakistan leg but join the squad in Bangladesh ahead of that three-match ODI series, once their IPL commitments have concluded.
Sydney Sixers standout Davies has seemingly jumped Short in the T20 pecking order after his outstanding BBL season, Aaron Hardie is back in the T20 fray and Josh Philippe will serve as back-up to T20 gloveman Josh Inglis.
Victorian Peake, 19, hit an unbeaten 70 to steer Victoria home in his second Sheffield Shield match and hit a last-ball six for the Renegades to beat the Scorchers in Perth before leaving to hit two hundreds as captain in Australia’s under-19 World Cup.
Scott, 25, has been a key plank of South Australia’s attack in back-to-back Shield titles and was player of this year’s tournament.
“It’s always exciting to see new players get an opportunity to play international cricket and be a part of the national team,” chief selector George Bailey said.
“The blend of experienced players coupled with new or returning players will provide a nice mix for these subcontinent tours.
“Continuing to provide opportunities for players to develop across a broad range of conditions and experiences is important and will continue to be a focus over the next 18 months to two years.”
