Fremantle Dockers star Shai Bolton has revealed that his breathtaking mark and goal, both nominated for the AFL's Mark and Goal of the Year awards, were a tribute to his family and Indigenous culture.
Emotional Dedication
Bolton, who joined Fremantle from Richmond at the end of last season, produced the spectacular moments during the Dockers' clash with Melbourne at the MCG. The 24-year-old launched high above opponent Jake Lever to take a stunning mark, before his long-range goal from the boundary left fans in awe.
Speaking after the match, Bolton said the plays were deeply personal. “That mark and goal were for my family and my culture,” he said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, to show where I come from and make them proud.”
Cultural Significance
Bolton, a proud Indigenous Australian, emphasised the importance of representing his heritage on the field. “Footy is a way for me to express myself and connect with my roots,” he said. “Every time I play, I think about my ancestors and the sacrifices they made. These nominations are not just for me; they’re for everyone who has supported me.”
The dual premiership player has quickly become a fan favourite at Fremantle, known for his electrifying speed and skill. His mark and goal contenders have sparked widespread acclaim, with many pundits labelling them as frontrunners for the annual awards.
Coach and Teammates React
Dockers coach Justin Longmuir praised Bolton’s impact, saying, “Shai brings a special energy to the team. Those moments were incredible, but they’re a reflection of his hard work and the pride he takes in his identity.”
Teammate Caleb Serong added, “We see it every week at training. For him to do it on the big stage is amazing. We’re all behind him for the awards.”
Bolton’s performances have been a highlight in an otherwise inconsistent season for Fremantle, currently sitting mid-table on the AFL ladder. The Dockers will be hoping to finish the season strongly, with Bolton’s form a key factor.
Awards Race
The Mark and Goal of the Year winners will be announced at the end of the home-and-away season, with fans able to vote online. Bolton’s efforts have already drawn comparisons to iconic moments in AFL history, cementing his status as one of the league’s most exciting talents.
