Essendon’s Nik Cox is set to make his long-awaited return to AFL action this Saturday, ending a 630-day absence that nearly resulted in a concussion-forced retirement. The 24-year-old, 200cm midfielder has not played for the Bombers since being knocked out in a loss to Gold Coast in August 2024.
Road to recovery
After facing the AFL’s concussion panel in June last year, Cox was ruled out for the remainder of the season but was given hope for a comeback in 2026. In July, he released a statement saying: “This time away from the game will be used to focus fully on my health, recovery, and building the strongest possible foundation heading into pre-season.”
“I’ve learned a lot about myself over the past few months, and I’m more motivated than ever to get back to doing what I love. My focus now is on continuing to work closely with specialists and the club to make sure I’m in the best place physically and mentally to return to football.”
Cox, who is out of contract at the end of the season, was close to a call-up earlier this month but had to wait until now. He will play his 54th AFL game against Brisbane at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Good news amid injury concerns
His return is a welcome boost for Essendon after Isaac Kako suffered a back stress fracture. Coach Brad Scott confirmed Kako’s absence: “The bottom line is, he won’t be playing for this month or so at least. These back stress fractures are not just at our club, but right across the board are becoming a little bit too common.”
Scott added: “You expect these types of injuries in 200cm fast bowlers, but not in 180cm small forwards. Sullivan Robey came with the same injury before he set foot in the club. I think the loads on young players prior to the draft is probably something that we’d be keen to have a look at.”
More to come...
