Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos has declared next year's revived AFL State of Origin match will be played at maximum intensity, with players from Victoria and Western Australia refusing to treat the historic clash as a mere exhibition.
Honouring the Big V Legacy
Daicos, unveiled as part of Victoria's elite midfield core on Monday, expressed profound respect for the jumper he will wear. The 22-year-old Magpies sensation joins marquee names including Marcus Bontempelli, Zak Butters, and Matt Rowell in a powerhouse Victorian squad.
"When we grow up, we idolise playing in games like this," Daicos stated on Tuesday morning. "To get that opportunity is something I don't take for granted and can't wait for."
He revealed that stories passed down from his father, Collingwood great Peter Daicos, have fuelled his appreciation for the state-of-origin concept's rich history. "It's a huge honour and there's obviously such a rich history to it," Daicos said. "Anyone who gets the chance to play for Victoria is jumping at the opportunity, it's so exciting."
No Holding Back in Pre-Season Showdown
Addressing concerns that players might protect themselves in a pre-season fixture, Daicos was unequivocal. He emphasised that state pride and competitive instinct would ensure neither side takes it easy, despite the match falling just over two weeks before the AFL season proper begins.
"It's a huge honour to play for Victoria, and it's also just over two weeks out from the start of the season, so there won't be anyone running around at half speed," Daicos affirmed.
He predicted an electric atmosphere at Perth's Optus Stadium on February 14. "Optus Stadium is a great ground, so no doubt it will be packed out. I think it will be full noise," he said, anticipating a star-studded Western Australian lineup.
Team Dynamics and Jersey Number Diplomacy
Daicos also touched on the privilege of collaborating with Victoria's finest, stating the team feels a debt to their state. "We owe so much to Victoria, so to get the chance to represent them, hopefully we can do them proud and get the win."
In a lighter moment, the young star addressed the potential jersey number dilemma involving Geelong champion Patrick Dangerfield. Should Dangerfield be selected as anticipated, Daicos confirmed he would happily relinquish the No.35. "I think Danger gets first dibs on the number 35," he joked. "So I will have to decide if I want three or five."
With the stage set for a blockbuster revival, Daicos and his Victorian teammates are preparing to deliver a contest that honours the fierce tradition of State of Origin football.
