Essendon Captain Zach Merrett Absent from Pre-Season Start Amid Hawks Fallout
Essendon captain skips pre-season after Hawks bid fails

Essendon Football Club has begun its pre-season preparations without captain Zach Merrett, who was notably absent from Monday's opening training session at the Hangar.

Leadership Uncertainty After Failed Trade Bid

The Bombers skipper, who attempted to join arch-rivals Hawthorn during the trade period despite having two years remaining on his contract, is now almost certain to lose his captaincy position. Hawthorn failed to present a trade offer that satisfied Essendon for their six-time best and fairest winner, forcing Merrett to remain with the club.

While Monday's session was technically for first-to-fourth year players, Merrett's absence broke from tradition for the standard-setting midfielder, who would typically be present for the pre-season commencement. The 30-year-old was reportedly attending a wedding interstate and under no formal obligation to attend.

Senior Presence and Support for Merrett

Vice-captain and likely leadership successor Andrew McGrath was among several senior players who did attend the session. McGrath was joined by fellow experienced Bombers Mason Redman, Kyle Langford, Jordan Ridley, Ben McKay and Peter Wright, providing strong senior representation despite Merrett's absence.

Defender Zach Reid moved to quell any concerns about team unity, telling reporters: "The group's galvanised. We're all good. He's obviously not required yet so that's not a big issue. But yeah, we'll welcome him back with open arms. He's our best player, and there's no denying that. So he's going to make us a better team."

Positive Training Environment and Player Returns

Reid expressed enthusiasm about the club's off-season program, stating: "I feel like our off-season program has been top-notch, and I think a lot of the boys agree. And it's really individualised, so I think the boys are liking that, and I've enjoyed it. It's been good."

In positive news for the club, utility Nik Cox received clearance from the AFL concussion board to return to full training after travelling to the United States for specialist advice from UFC medical staff about his concussion management.

Former Carlton player Jaxon Binns, who was delisted by the Blues despite having a year remaining on his contract, made an immediate impression by winning the club's opening time trial. Binns has joined Essendon's VFL program and will train with the senior squad throughout the pre-season.

The Bombers now face the challenge of integrating their captain back into the group while resolving leadership questions ahead of the 2025 AFL season.
