A former Port Adelaide rookie has been sentenced to more than five years behind bars after being found guilty of raping a woman on two separate occasions in 2023.
Details of the Attacks and Court Findings
Callum Hay, aged 33, was sentenced in the District Court after a jury convicted him of two counts of rape against the same woman. The court heard that the first assault occurred in a car outside his Mount Barker BFT Gym, where he forced himself on the victim despite her clear refusal.
Second Incident Captured on Phone
Days later, Hay confronted the woman inside the gym and pushed her against a wall. This second attack was partially captured on the victim's phone, providing crucial evidence. Judge Ian Press noted that Hay's own words during this incident revealed his intent, quoting him as saying, "I don't want to stop" when told to cease by the victim.
Judge Press remarked that this comment was highly informative in establishing Hay's culpability. Hay was acquitted of a third rape charge by the jury.
Background and Consequences
Hay was drafted by Port Adelaide in 2010 but was delisted a year later without playing a senior AFL game. He subsequently played over 300 local matches across various South Australian clubs. His BFT gym in Mount Barker has since closed following the convictions.
Hay must serve a non-parole period of three years and two months before being eligible for release. The case highlights serious issues of sexual violence and accountability in community settings.
