Fremantle Dockers Team News: Hayden Young Injury Opens Door for Chris Scerri Debut
Fremantle Dockers have announced significant team changes ahead of their crucial early-season AFL clash against Melbourne, with pre-season signing Chris Scerri set to make his debut following Hayden Young's hamstring injury. Coach Justin Longmuir has confirmed that Sean Darcy will retain his position as the primary ruck, despite limited game time in the season opener.
Sean Darcy Retains Ruck Role Despite Pre-Season Setbacks
Sean Darcy, the 2021 Doig medallist, has been named to start against Melbourne despite playing only 45 per cent of game time in Fremantle's loss to Geelong. This was the lowest of any Dockers player, attributed to a calf injury that hampered his pre-season preparation. In that match, Darcy managed just 10 touches, two marks, and 22 hit-outs against Geelong's Mitch Edwards and Mark Blicavs.
Longmuir has opted to stick with Darcy over Collingwood premiership star Mason Cox, who had a faultless pre-season but remains an emergency alongside veteran defender Luke Ryan and wingman Jeremy Sharp. This decision underscores the coach's confidence in Darcy's ability to bounce back in this must-win encounter.
Chris Scerri's Rapid Rise to AFL Debut
Chris Scerri, a 19-year-old speedster, will make his AFL debut just a month after securing the final spot on Fremantle's list. He replaces Hayden Young, who was ruled out on Wednesday with another hamstring injury. Scerri's journey to the AFL has been remarkably swift; in 2024, he was playing under-18s for Strathmore in the Essendon Districts Football League before featuring in all 18 games for the now-defunct VFL side, the Northern Bullants.
Originally signed with Richmond's VFL side, Scerri earned a training opportunity with the Dockers over summer, impressing the club with his exceptional pace and defensive pressure. "It's been a crazy two months. I really haven't sat down and taken it all in. It's been crazy, and I'm super excited," Scerri said. "Who would have thought, only two weeks ago, or even a bit more, I signed with Freo, and now I'm debuting in round two. Things can happen really quickly, and you just gotta get up to it."
Scerri added that he is particularly looking forward to running out in front of the Fremantle Army and aims to bring pressure and showcase his traits while fulfilling his team role. His selection follows a strong performance where he was named among Peel Thunder's best in their pre-season win over Perth last weekend.
