Fremantle Dockers have kicked off contract discussions with forward Sam Switkowski, as the club navigates an uncertain future for veteran midfielder Jaeger O'Mara.
Switkowski's Rising Stock
The 24-year-old small forward has emerged as a key player for Fremantle this season, impressing with his pressure acts and goal sense. Switkowski has booted 15 goals from 18 games in 2024, cementing his spot in the Dockers' forward line. His consistent performances have prompted the club to open talks on a new deal, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the year.
Fremantle list manager David Walls confirmed the negotiations, stating that the club is keen to retain the hard-working forward. “Sam has been fantastic for us this year. He brings great energy and tackles hard. We are working through the details with his management and are optimistic about reaching an agreement,” Walls said.
Switkowski, who was drafted as a rookie in 2019, has developed into a reliable contributor. His ability to apply forward pressure and hit the scoreboard has made him a valuable asset in Justin Longmuir's game plan.
Jaeger O'Mara's Future in Doubt
Meanwhile, the Dockers face a tough decision on veteran midfielder Jaeger O'Mara. The 30-year-old, who joined Fremantle from Gold Coast in 2022, has struggled with injuries this season, managing only eight games. With his contract also expiring, speculation is mounting that the club may not offer him a new deal.
O'Mara's management is reportedly fielding interest from several rival clubs, including Essendon and North Melbourne, who are in need of experienced midfield depth. The Dockers are believed to be weighing up whether to retain the former Sun or free up list space for younger talent.
Walls acknowledged the situation, saying, “Jaeger is a quality person and player, but we have to consider our list balance and future direction. We will sit down with him and his manager in the coming weeks to discuss his future.”
O'Mara, originally from Western Australia, has played 175 AFL games across two clubs. He was part of Fremantle's leadership group in 2023 but has been hampered by soft-tissue injuries this year.
List Management Challenges
The Dockers are also juggling contract talks with other key players, including ruckman Sean Darcy and defender Brennan Cox. Both are expected to command significant salary cap space, which may impact decisions on fringe players.
Fremantle currently sits ninth on the AFL ladder and is pushing for a finals berth. Retaining core talent like Switkowski while making tough calls on veterans will be crucial to the club's long-term success.
The Dockers are expected to finalize their list decisions ahead of the trade period in October.
