Geelong Cautious with Stengle's Return, Bruhn Back After Charges Dropped
Geelong's Stengle Ruled Out, Bruhn Returns After Charges Dropped

Geelong Cats star forward Tyson Stengle has been officially ruled out for the AFL's Opening Round clash against Gold Coast, with the club adopting a deliberately cautious approach to his return amid ongoing personal challenges.

Stengle's Extended Leave and Cautious Comeback

Chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary exclusively revealed last month that Stengle had taken an extended period of leave from the club over the Christmas break, commencing his time away earlier than his teammates in December. The All-Australian forward has since returned to full training sessions, but Geelong's football department has confirmed he will not feature in the season-opening match at People First Stadium on March 6.

Club captain Patrick Dangerfield emphasised the long-term strategy being employed with the talented forward, stating the priority is ensuring Stengle is at his best during the most critical phases of the season. "We gotta be mindful that we want Tyson playing his best footy as quickly as possible, but in the most important parts of the season," Dangerfield explained on Thursday morning.

"You gotta win games early enough in the season to put yourself in that position to compete, but we're mindful of where he is at and the personal challenges that he's had. We've been really supportive of that."

Dangerfield further elaborated that the club will take a considered and measured approach to Stengle's eventual return to match play. "Tying into that line of thinking, we'll take a really considered approach to when he's available to get back into playing games. He's doing full training at the moment ... but we'll make sure that progression is slow, consistent and sustainable once he's back."

Welfare Remains the Absolute Priority

Geelong's football boss Andrew Mackie reinforced the club's stance in a statement last month, clearly prioritising the player's wellbeing above all else. "Tyson's welfare is our priority and, with the support of the club, he'll be given the time he needs before returning to training," Mackie said.

Stengle's journey to Geelong came after his career was revitalised by the Cats following his delisting by Adelaide in March 2021 after an incident involving an illicit substance. His remarkable resurgence saw him earn All-Australian honours in his debut season with Geelong and play a key role in the club's 2022 premiership victory.

Tanner Bruhn's Return After Challenging Year

In a separate but significant development for the club, Dangerfield also expressed immense satisfaction with the return of midfielder Tanner Bruhn to the playing group. Bruhn missed the entire 2025 season after being stood down by the AFL while police investigated serious charges of rape and intentional sexual touching related to an alleged incident in early 2023.

The legal situation took a dramatic turn when a key witness admitted to providing false information. Subsequently, prosecutors dropped all charges against Bruhn before the matter could proceed to trial.

The 23-year-old is now free to resume his AFL career and is training within a bolstered Geelong midfield that now includes former Hawthorn player James Worpel, alongside established stars Bailey Smith and Max Holmes.

"It's been fantastic, we're so thrilled as players to have him back, to see him smile," Dangerfield said of Bruhn's return. "It's been a challenging 12 months for Tanner and the club, but I'm really proud with the way he has gone about it and how he's put it behind him ... all he can control is the way he trains and his teammates love having him back."

Geelong's dual approach—exercising extreme care with Stengle's welfare while reintegrating Bruhn after a resolved legal ordeal—highlights the complex personal and professional management required in modern elite sport.
