Gold Coast Coach Hardwick Criticizes Mac Andrew's On-Field Antics

Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has finally voiced his frustration with defender Mac Andrew's on-field behavior, acknowledging that rival teams will persistently test the combustible player throughout the AFL season. The fullback's actions during Sunday's 59-point victory over West Coast highlighted these concerns, as Andrew gave away a 50-meter penalty after slinging debutant Milan Murdock to the ground near the boundary line.

Disciplinary Issues Under Scrutiny

This incident marks the latest in a series of indiscretions from the fiery 22-year-old, who is secured with the Suns until at least 2030 on a lucrative contract reportedly exceeding $1 million annually. During the match, Andrew conceded three free kicks, contributing to a frustrating night where opponent Jake Waterman managed to kick 3.3. Hardwick, known for his own volatile temper as a player, expressed clear disappointment in Andrew's conduct.

"Disappointed... he's better than that. He knew he'd overstepped the mark," Hardwick stated. "There's times I can handle it, and I'm here to support him. Geez, look at my playing tape; just as bad, worse. He'll eventually grow out of it."

Balancing Talent and Temperament

Hardwick emphasized that Andrew's volatility, much like that of West Coast's Harley Reid, is a key component of his star potential. However, he stressed the need for better self-control. "But at times, like me, he's got to pull his head in," the coach added. "We'll speak about that. I love the kid. Love the way he plays. He was very good and then he had some moments tonight that were not so good."

The coach warned that Andrew's reputation makes him a target for provocation by opposing teams, a challenge the Suns must help him navigate. "That's part of it; he's put himself in a situation and it's our job to help him through that," Hardwick explained.

Team Updates and Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Andrew's role could shift as soon as next Saturday's match against Richmond at the MCG, with key defender Charlie Ballard potentially returning from injury. Ballard, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in last year's corresponding fixture, has participated in two VFL practice matches recently.

Additionally, midfield-forward Bailey Humphrey, who was a late scratch due to a hamstring issue, is expected to be fit for the upcoming game, with Jake Rogers having replaced him. The Suns also have the option to promote either Jed Walter or former Western Bulldogs' No. 1 pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, both of whom featured in Sunday's VFL practice game.

As the season progresses, Hardwick's guidance will be crucial in helping Andrew channel his aggression productively, ensuring his talent benefits the team without costly penalties.
