Damien Hardwick Urges Patience Over Jamarra Ugle-Hagan's Potential Gold Coast Debut
Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has deliberately downplayed the possibility of Jamarra Ugle-Hagan making his club debut in the AFL season opener against Geelong this Friday. The Western Bulldogs recruit, who has not played competitive football in over a year due to off-field issues, has shown impressive form during the pre-season, but Hardwick emphasized a cautious approach to his integration.
Pre-Season Form Sparks Speculation
Ugle-Hagan, 23, trained strongly on Wednesday, matching up against key defender Mac Andrew in a session that hinted at his readiness for the clash at People First Stadium. His prospects were further boosted by fellow key forward Jed Walter's one-game suspension for high contact in a pre-season match against Brisbane, potentially opening a spot alongside Ben King in the forward line.
However, Hardwick was quick to temper expectations, stating, "Our statement on Jamarra ... well, we have to do what is best for him for the long-term future of his place in the footy club." He highlighted that Ugle-Hagan has been out of action for approximately 400 days, underscoring the need for patience to ensure his success at the highest level.
Coach's Cautious Stance on Debut Decision
While acknowledging Ugle-Hagan's capacity to play, Hardwick suggested that game time in a lower-level competition might be a more prudent option initially. "It's not a no ... we love what he's brought to our footy club. We're excited by the prospect but at times we just have to be a little bit patient," he explained. This approach reflects the Suns' focus on long-term player development rather than rushing returns.
Other Team Updates and Debut Confirmations
In other team news, academy graduate and No.2 draft pick Zeke Uwland will make his debut, as confirmed by the club on Wednesday. His older brother and teammate Bodhi delivered the news, adding a personal touch to the announcement.
On the injury front, Brownlow Medallist Matt Rowell is likely to return after the club's bye in round three following surgery on a fractured finger. Key defender Charlie Ballard is set to make his comeback from a knee reconstruction in the VFL on Friday.
To fill the void left by Rowell, big-bodied midfielder Alex Davies will step into the Suns' engine room, joining Melbourne recruit Christian Petracca. Hardwick expressed confidence in Davies, saying, "Al Davies is a guy that we've got enormous scope for improvement for, and we're looking for him to take that step."
