Melbourne Demons Defender Harrison Petty Faces Medical Tests After Concerning On-Field Incident
Melbourne Demons player Harrison Petty is undergoing a series of medical examinations this week as the club seeks to determine the cause of a disturbing health episode that occurred during Sunday's AFL victory. The defender suddenly became unsteady on his feet during the match against Brisbane at the MCG, requiring assistance to leave the field.
Uncertain Diagnosis and Ongoing Investigations
While Petty has been placed in concussion protocols as a precautionary measure, the exact nature of his condition remains unclear. Demons coach Steven King addressed the media before Wednesday's training session, emphasizing the unique and puzzling circumstances surrounding the incident.
"It's a unique situation. We're still doing some tests with him," King stated. "We're still not really sure exactly what's happened—we're exploring all those possibilities. We've put him in protocols at the moment, because that's the most obvious, but we're still not 100 percent sure that's the case. There's still a range of things it could be."
Team Support and Broader AFL Context
Teammates immediately rushed to Petty's aid during the concerning moment, which occurred just three days after Carlton player Elijah Hollands faced his own health scrutiny. As Carlton reviews how Hollands was permitted to remain on the field for an extended period, discussions have emerged about potentially organizing a mental health-themed game involving both the Demons and Blues.
"After the week we've had, as an industry it's important we make moves to support and put the right things in place around people," King remarked, highlighting the AFL's growing focus on player welfare.
Impact on Upcoming Anzac Eve Match
Petty's mysterious health issue means Melbourne will need to make at least one change to their lineup for the annual Anzac Eve match this Friday night against Richmond at the MCG. King anticipates that selection decisions will be particularly challenging given the significance of the occasion.
"I don't think there will be too many players putting their hand up, saying 'I want to miss this one'," he noted.
Team Performance and Development
The Demons enter the match with a 4-2 record following their impressive win, while Richmond remains winless this season. King revealed that during the off-season, some predictions had suggested Melbourne might find themselves in a similar difficult position.
"Over summer, people were saying we were going to be 0-6. I didn't see that, from the way we were training," he said.
King emphasized that the experience gained from defeating the reigning premiers last weekend would prove invaluable for his developing team. "Some of those young players... it would be worth 10 or 15 games worth of experience, just playing against that quality of team and players, in that type of game."
Areas for Improvement and Individual Standouts
Despite being favored against Richmond, King stressed that his team still has considerable room for growth. "Some of our decisions and ball use—we probably handed them (Lions) five blatant turnover goals, which is nothing about taking game on or playing with flair. It's a little about execution."
Second-year player Harvey Langford has emerged as a standout performer this season, with King attributing his success to dedicated work with assistant coach Nathan Jones. "Footy is a pretty complex game, but it's pretty simple as well—the harder you work, the luckier you get. Footy karma doesn't always look out for you, but he's certainly invested more time into his week. He's been getting rewarded on weekends, which is great."
