Hawthorn's Workrate Woes Lead to AFL Loss to GWS

Hawthorn's Lackluster Start Results in AFL Defeat Against GWS

In a disappointing start to their AFL season, Hawthorn suffered a 27-point loss to GWS, with coach Sam Mitchell bluntly stating his team got exactly what they deserved. The Giants secured a convincing 19.8 (122) to 14.11 (95) victory at Engie Stadium, overcoming injury setbacks with a dynamic performance led by Jake Stringer's five-goal haul.

Mitchell Criticizes Hawks' Effort and Midfield Struggles

Mitchell expressed frustration over Hawthorn's workrate, noting that GWS outworked us from the very start of the game. He highlighted specific issues, such as conceding 35 marks in the second quarter, which prevented the Hawks from gaining control. We have no excuses to put in that sort of workrate, Mitchell admitted, acknowledging that the team was ill-prepared for GWS's intensity despite preseason preparations.

The midfield was a key area of concern for Hawthorn, who were without injured player Will Day and failed to recruit Essendon's Zach Merrett. In contrast, GWS's running game shone, with Finn Callaghan amassing 26 disposals and 735 metres gained, and Lachie Whitfield contributing 27 disposals. Mitchell remains optimistic, however, asserting that Hawthorn can address these issues ahead of their upcoming match against Merrett's Bombers.

Stringer and GWS Stars Shine Amidst Challenges

Jake Stringer was a standout for GWS, delivering a five-goal performance that captivated the crowd, including Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks, who was in attendance. Coach Adam Kingsley praised Stringer's dedication, saying, He's working hard on and off the field... he's dragging others along with him.

Despite missing key players like Tom Green, Aaron Cadman, Sam Taylor, and Brent Daniels due to injuries, GWS received impactful contributions from recruits and veterans. Clayton Oliver, unwanted at Melbourne last year, impressed with 27 disposals and nine clearances, while Stephen Coniglio added two goals and 22 disposals. Young defender Joe Fonti and ex-Bomber Jayden Laverde also excelled, with Fonti recording 22 disposals and 10 intercepts.

Game Highlights and Late Fightback Fall Short

The match began with a high-scoring first quarter, where GWS established a 19-point lead thanks to Jesse Hogan's three goals. Hawthorn struggled to close the gap, trailing by 39 points at both halftime and three-quarter time. Although the Hawks mounted a late resurgence, reducing the deficit to 22 points, GWS debutant Phoenix Gothard sealed the victory with a sensational goal.

Notable efforts from Hawthorn included co-captains James Sicily and Jai Newcombe, who battled hard with 23 and 25 disposals respectively, while Nick Watson and Jack Gunston contributed two and four goals. The turf at Engie Stadium, recently used for Bad Bunny concerts, appeared patchy but did not affect player performance.

Looking ahead, GWS will face the Western Bulldogs next Saturday, as both teams continue their AFL campaigns.
