Jai Culley's promising start to his second season with Melbourne has been dealt a cruel blow, with the midfielder suffering a potentially serious knee injury. The 23-year-old former West Coast player went down late in the second quarter against Richmond on Friday night and immediately clutched at his left leg.
Play continued nearby as a trainer rushed out to check on the midfielder. Commentator Abbey Holmes noted on Channel 7: "He's grabbed straight at that left knee, he is in a world of pain." As replays aired, Matthew Richardson added: "I don't like it when there's not a lot of contact. Let's hope he's OK, been really good this year for the Dees."
The injury is particularly devastating for Culley, who suffered a ruptured right ACL in 2023. He returned to the bench later in the second term on Friday night, visibly distressed. "He's at the back of the bench and he's had his head in his hands," Holmes reported. "He looks absolutely shattered, he is done for the night with that knee injury."
Culley will now hope for a miracle to avoid the same fate as Collingwood defender Reef McInnes, who just hours earlier tore his left ACL one year on from tearing his right. Culley's injury came just minutes after a boundary umpire hurt his wrist in a fall; the whistleblower attempted to get out of the way of a kick but landed hard and quickly held his injured arm.
More updates to come as the situation develops.
