The Newcastle Knights have secured a significant contract double, announcing the retention of winger Greg Marzhew and back-rower Jermaine McEwen. The news comes fresh off the confirmation of Marzhew's multi-year extension, with the powerhouse ball-runner spurning interest from rival clubs to remain in Newcastle until the end of the 2029 season.
McEwen signs on until 2028
Jermaine McEwen, the 21-year-old back-rower, has committed to the club until the end of the 2028 season. The former NSW under-19s representative, who joined Newcastle from Penrith's pathways system two years ago, has played 26 games for the Knights since debuting last year. McEwen was originally contracted until the end of next year but has now re-signed for an additional season.
Knights recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan praised McEwen's integration into the region. "Since relocating from Western Sydney with his family, Jermaine has embraced the city and its community, he absolutely loves Newcastle," O'Sullivan said. "The exciting thing is we do not know Jermaine's ceiling. What we do know is he will keep getting better under the coaching he is receiving, and we cannot wait to see his continued development as an NRL player."
Marzhew rejects rivals to stay
The McEwen announcement followed a day after winger Greg Marzhew turned down interest from rival clubs to sign a multi-year extension. The 29-year-old will remain in Newcastle until the end of the 2029 season, extending his stay by three years. His previous contract was due to expire at the end of this season, and it is understood several other NRL teams were keen to secure his services.
O'Sullivan highlighted Marzhew's exceptional form. "Greg has been in stellar form, he's thriving outside [centre] Bradman [Best], and we're pleased he has recommitted to the club," he said. "The game is dependent on backfield carries and Greg has one of the best carries in the NRL. Along with his try-scoring ability, he produces tries that others just can't score. Pleasingly, Greg turned down higher offers from other clubs to stay with the Knights and be part of our success moving forward."
Record-breaking form
Marzhew has been in sensational try-scoring form this season, bagging 13 tries in nine games, including eight over the past two matches. He equalled the club's record for the most tries scored in a single game with five in last week's 44-10 victory over St George Illawarra.
Knights coach Justin Holbrook lauded Marzhew's contribution. "Greg is an extremely important part of our left edge," Holbrook said. "After being a late starter in the NRL, Greg has improved each year, with his form this season showing he is a world-class winger. This contract extension is a great reward for his hard work."
The double signing underscores the Knights' commitment to building a strong squad for the future, retaining key talent while fending off competition from rival clubs.
