Chaz Mostert has finally secured his first victory of the Supercars season, winning the opening race of the Tasmania Super 440 at Symmons Plains Raceway. The defending champion dominated the 120-kilometre sprint in his Walkinshaw TWG Racing Toyota Supra, crossing the line a massive 5.322 seconds ahead of the field on Saturday.
The 34-year-old’s triumph was his first since Sandown in November last year, ending a frustrating start to the season as he and his team adapted to the new Supra. His best result before Saturday had been a third-place finish in the final Taupo race last month, while teammate Ryan Wood claimed the Supra’s first win in New Zealand.
However, Mostert could not repeat the feat in the second 50-lap sprint later in the day. Andre Heimgartner converted pole position into victory for Brad Jones Racing, making it two Toyota wins in the Tasmania Super 440. The result also denied Triple Eight star Broc Feeney, who finished second after a hard-fought battle.
Race one drama and penalties
In the opening race, David Reynolds finished second for Team 18, while Brodie Kostecki prevailed in a tense battle with series leader Feeney for third. Kostecki, driving for Dick Johnson Racing, had qualified third but was relegated to fifth on the grid after impeding rookie Jackson Walls in qualifying.
“That was pretty hard work,” Kostecki said. “Broc’s a really smart racer, so he knew every move I was going to do. I had to make sure I was really decisive on what I was going to do.”
Mostert expressed his delight after the win: “Just super pumped to get a win for Toyota. So awesome to see Ryan do it in New Zealand, I felt a little bit left out. It’s nice to join the tally for the year. Just a cool reward for all the guys and girls at Walkinshaw TWG Racing. They’ve built a brand new car coming into this year, and starting to get some results so early in the season is really cool.”
Race two: Heimgartner holds off Feeney
In the second race, Heimgartner fended off a determined Feeney to claim his first win of the season. Matt Payne finished third for Grove Racing, ahead of Feeney’s Triple Eight teammate Will Brown.
Mostert’s race two was a disaster. Qualifying 13th, he was handed a 15-second penalty for sending PremiAir Racing rookie Jayden Ojeda off track on lap 15, dropping him to 20th. Reynolds also received a 15-second penalty for slamming into the rear of Kostecki’s Ford, finishing 17th. Kostecki could only complete five laps before retiring.
Championship standings
Feeney continues to lead the Supercars championship, with Kostecki second, Payne third, Cam Waters fourth, and Wood fifth.
