Perth Glory have bid a fitting farewell to retiring club great Josh Risdon, securing a 2-1 victory over Brisbane Roar in their A-League Men clash at HBF Park on Saturday night.
The win was a emotional night for the Glory faithful, who turned out in numbers to honour Risdon's distinguished career. The 33-year-old defender, who has been a cornerstone of the club for over a decade, received a guard of honour from both teams before kick-off.
Match highlights
Perth Glory started brightly, dominating possession in the early stages. Their pressure paid off in the 23rd minute when winger Daniel Stynes cut inside from the left flank and unleashed a powerful strike that beat Brisbane goalkeeper Macklin Freke at his near post.
The home side doubled their advantage just before half-time through a well-worked set piece. A corner kick was headed clear only as far as Glory midfielder Giordano Colli, who volleyed the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Brisbane fightback
Brisbane Roar came out with renewed purpose in the second half, pressing high and creating several chances. Their persistence was rewarded in the 67th minute when forward Thomas Waddingham latched onto a through ball and slotted past Glory goalkeeper Oliver Sail.
The Roar pushed for an equaliser, but the Glory defence, marshalled by Risdon, held firm. The veteran right-back made a crucial goal-line clearance in the 82nd minute to preserve his side's lead.
Emotional farewell
As the final whistle blew, Risdon was visibly emotional, embracing teammates and staff. The club had organised a special ceremony post-match, with video tributes from former teammates and coaches played on the big screen.
Risdon, who made over 250 appearances for the Glory, announced his retirement earlier this month. He is widely regarded as one of the club's greatest servants, having played a key role in their run to the A-League grand final in 2019.
Speaking after the match, Glory coach David Zdrilic praised Risdon's contribution. "Josh is a legend of this club. He has given everything for the jersey and tonight was a fitting tribute to his career. We are all proud of him," Zdrilic said.
The victory lifts Perth Glory to fifth on the A-League Men ladder, keeping their finals hopes alive with two rounds remaining. Brisbane Roar remain in ninth place, their playoff chances now slim.
