Port Adelaide AFLW Coach Lauren Arnell Steps Down

Port Adelaide's AFLW program is undergoing a significant leadership change following the resignation of senior coach Lauren Arnell. The 38-year-old premiership player, who guided the Power since their competition entry in 2021, has stepped down to prioritise her family commitments.

A Difficult Decision After Deep Reflection

Arnell revealed that extensive contemplation during the Christmas break led to her difficult choice. "I have made the challenging decision to step away to dedicate more time and presence to my family," Arnell stated in an official club announcement on Tuesday. She acknowledged the substantial demands of senior coaching, recognising she could no longer meet the role's requirements while balancing family life.

Remarkable Coaching Journey Through Pregnancy

Arnell's coaching tenure included an extraordinary personal milestone. She coached throughout the entire 2023 AFLW season while pregnant, giving birth in January 2024. Her dedication culminated in leading Port Adelaide to a preliminary final appearance during the 2024 season, marking the club's deepest finals run since joining the competition.

Building a Program from Inception

Reflecting on her four-season tenure, Arnell expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to establish Port Adelaide's AFLW program from its foundation. "Being entrusted with building the program from its inception is something I will always cherish," she said. "I take immense pride in what our team accomplished together during these formative years."

The departing coach extended heartfelt appreciation to numerous stakeholders:

  • Players who demonstrated commitment and growth
  • Fellow coaches who collaborated on strategy
  • Football department staff providing essential support
  • Club members and supporters who embraced the team
  • The broader Port Adelaide Football Club community

"The relationships forged and experiences gained throughout this journey will remain with me long after my coaching tenure concludes," Arnell emphasised. She expressed continued confidence in the program's direction and extended her best wishes for future success.

Port Adelaide's Recent Performance

Port Adelaide concluded the 2025 AFLW season positioned tenth on the ladder, achieving a balanced record of six wins and six losses. The club now faces the task of appointing a new leader to build upon Arnell's foundational work and guide the team toward future premiership contention.
