Port Adelaide Teammates Georgiades and Butters Face Off in AFL Origin Showdown
Port Teammates Face Off in AFL Origin as Housemates

In a unique twist to the classic State against State rivalry, Port Adelaide teammates Mitch Georgiades and Zak Butters are set to face off as opponents in this weekend's AFL Origin clash. The pair, who share a home in Adelaide, will put their friendship aside when they line up for Western Australia and Victoria respectively at Optus Stadium in Perth.

Rent on the Line in Housemate Rivalry

The stakes are personal for Georgiades and Butters, with more than just State pride on the line. Georgiades revealed on SEN radio that their living arrangement has added an extra layer of competition to the build-up.

"There's rent on the line," Georgiades said. "The rent either goes up or down for a couple of weeks, based on the result. So we really need the WA boys to pull through."

Friendly Fire in the Lead-Up

The competitive tension has been building at their shared Adelaide residence in the weeks leading up to the match. Georgiades described how the pair have been engaging in playful physical contests to set the tone early.

"It's definitely been starting to build around the house," Georgiades explained. "We've had a fair few little wrestles on the couch, just to set the tone early. He got me in training last week as well with a little bump. So I'm definitely looking forward to lining him up at one stage."

The forward admitted he's been told not to hit his teammate too hard during the match, but he's planning to go after Butters regardless. When asked about potential on-field incidents between teammates, Georgiades laughed: "We asked the question if you can get suspended in State of Origin for getting your own teammate, so we'll find out about that."

Georgiades' Career Momentum

The Origin match comes at an important time for Georgiades, who is looking to build on a career-best 2025 season. The spearhead kicked 58 goals last year and currently holds the AFL's longest active streak of kicking at least one goal per game, having hit the scoreboard in his past 22 matches.

For Georgiades, the Origin game represents more than just a pre-season hit-out. The Hale School product sees it as an opportunity to represent his home State while playing alongside childhood heroes.

Playing Alongside Childhood Idols

One of the highlights for Georgiades will be lining up alongside Western Australian captain Patrick Cripps, whom he idolised growing up.

"Growing up, he was my favourite player. I had him on the back of my phone as my lock screen," Georgiades revealed. "To actually line up next to him will be pretty cool."

The return of representative football adds an exciting dimension to the AFL calendar, with players embracing the opportunity to represent their States while maintaining their club commitments. For Georgiades and Butters, this weekend's match will test both their on-field skills and their off-field friendship as they transition from housemates to Origin foes.
