Richmond have ended their 12-match AFL losing streak with a thrilling 11-point victory over West Coast, a win that was influenced by a controversial application of the stand rule. In front of 46,350 fans at the MCG, the Eagles held a narrow two-point lead with five minutes remaining when Harley Reid conceded a high-tackle free kick. Both Reid and Elliot Yeo ran to guard their defensive 50, but the umpire penalised Yeo with a 50-metre penalty for failing to stand the mark.
Controversial call proves decisive
This decision sparked debate among commentators. Gerard Healy remarked on Fox Footy: "This rule has got everyone under pressure and confused. It will impact the grand final, it's almost guaranteed." Steely Green converted the resulting set shot from 30 metres, and Tyler Sonsie added another goal shortly after to put the Tigers in control.
West Coast's No.1 draft pick Willem Duursma made it interesting with a stunning running goal with 88 seconds remaining, but Seth Campbell sealed the 15.9 (99) to 13.10 (88) win for Richmond with a clutch long-range set shot in the final minute.
Richmond's resilience amid injuries
Although Richmond remain at the bottom of the ladder with a 1-7 record, they celebrated their first win since beating the same opponent in Round 19 last year. The victory was even more remarkable given the Tigers entered the match with a 17-man injury list, which expanded to 18 when veteran Dion Prestia injured his calf early in the game.
West Coast slipped to 2-6 but showed significant improvement after last week's 101-point loss to St Kilda. The Eagles had nine lead changes in the first half alone, but their poor run continued as they lost a 19th consecutive quarter—a club record.
Key performers
Jack Ross was outstanding for Richmond with 29 disposals and 11 clearances, while Kane McAuliffe (28 disposals) also played a key role. Noah Balta, Jonty Faull, and Seth Campbell each kicked three goals for the Tigers.
For West Coast, Tim Kelly led with 30 disposals, seven clearances, and a goal. Harley Reid had a strong first half, finishing with 26 possessions, 10 clearances, and two goals.
Match summary
West Coast celebrated the 20-year anniversary of their 2006 premiership, with members of that team forming a guard of honour as the Eagles ran through the banner. The first half featured nine lead changes and several errors, including a notable blunder from Richmond's Sam Cumming, who kicked the ball 50 metres in the wrong direction.
The Eagles kicked the first three goals of the second quarter, including a two-bounce running goal from Reid, to open a 12-point lead. However, strong marking from Faull and two goals from Balta in the final minute of the half gave Richmond a 10-point lead at the main break.
West Coast extended their lead to 21 points midway through the third quarter before Richmond stormed back. The Eagles were just five minutes away from victory but conceded three of the last four goals of the match.
