The injury carnage didn't stop with Darcy. Tom Liberatore suffered concussion, while Rory Lobb and James O'Donnell both sustained hamstring injuries in what became a horror outing for the Bulldogs. The team, now 4-2, slipped to their second-straight loss amid the injury chaos.

Bulldogs medical boss Chris Bell expressed the club's disappointment in a statement, confirming the severity of Darcy's injury. "We're incredibly disappointed for Sam after scans confirmed he has ruptured his ACL," Bell said. "He's an extremely driven individual and we have no doubt he'll attack his rehabilitation strongly in the coming months."
Most players take approximately one year to return from a knee reconstruction, meaning Darcy faces a lengthy recovery process. This marks a cruel twist for the young forward, who had previously dodged an ACL injury when he hurt the same knee in April last year, though an impaction fracture and associated ligament damage sidelined him for two months at that time.
Family History and Emotional Impact
The injury carries particular poignancy given Darcy's family history. His father, 226-game Bulldogs great Luke Darcy, suffered two serious knee injuries during his decorated career and was sidelined for most of the 2005-06 seasons. Remarkably, the first of those injuries occurred at the same Kardinia Park venue almost exactly 21 years ago to the day.
When Darcy fell to the ground on Friday night, Geelong's coaches box and the 33,200-strong crowd fell eerily quiet. Cats coach Chris Scott acknowledged the emotional impact, stating, "I can't imagine their box being any more flat than ours when Sam Darcy went down. You're not a real football person if your heart doesn't go out to individuals and the club in situations like that."
Team Adjustments and Additional Injury Concerns
With Darcy out for the season and other key players injured, Beveridge faces significant challenges in reshaping his team. The coach forecast that Jedd Busslinger and Ryan Gardiner would replace key defenders Lobb and O'Donnell for the Bulldogs' crucial clash with the Sydney Swans next Thursday night.
The Bulldogs confirmed that Lobb at least had been cleared of serious damage to his hamstring, with the key defender to be assessed ahead of the Sydney clash. There was no immediate update on the severity of O'Donnell's injury.
Adding to the Bulldogs' woes, ruck star Tim English (knee) is no certainty to return, while Liberatore finds himself sidelined again after having only just returned from a hamstring injury.
