Mitchell Schofield Shines as East Perth Secures Hard-Fought Win Over Swan Districts
In a dramatic turnaround at Sullivan Logistics Stadium, East Perth rallied from an early deficit to defeat Swan Districts 13.12 (90) to 10.10 (70) in a gripping WAFL encounter on Saturday. The Royals' victory was spearheaded by a stellar performance from forward Mitchell Schofield, who marked his return to the lineup with four crucial goals.
Swans' Strong Start Fades as Royals Find Their Footing
Swan Districts burst out of the gates, stunning the home side by kicking the first four goals of the match. Debutant Lucas Impey made an immediate impact with 33 hit-outs, while midfielders Zane Trew and Josh Cipro dominated clearances to give the visitors early control. Zach Provest was particularly dangerous, scoring four goals, including one in the opening minute, and Jackson McLachlan added a highlight-reel goal with a dazzling solo effort.
East Perth, missing star player Hamish Brayshaw due to a calf injury, struggled initially to contain Swan Districts' surging midfield. It wasn't until after the 20-minute mark that the Royals responded, with Sebit Kuek converting a strong mark to get them on the board. Despite this, Swan Districts maintained their territorial advantage, leading 5.2 to 1.4 at the first break.
Schofield Ignites the Comeback with Clinical Finishing
The second quarter saw Mitchell Schofield, who missed the first-round loss to Subiaco, finally make his presence felt. He sparked the Royals' revival with a goal on the run, finishing the game with four majors, 17 touches, and four inside 50s. His efforts helped East Perth slow the game down and improve their kicking accuracy, though Swan Districts continued to find answers, including a debut goal from Leo Steed.
As the pressure intensified in the third term, Swan Districts' early daring play deserted them, often resorting to long kicks out of defence. East Perth capitalised, with defender Stanley Wright scoring a rare goal and Kuek putting the Royals in front for the first time. However, a late surge from Swan Districts, highlighted by Scott Jones' physical play and Provest's fourth goal on the siren, kept the contest alive.
Royals' Class Prevails in Final Quarter Dominance
In the decisive final quarter, Swan Districts ran out of steam, failing to score a goal as East Perth's superior class powered them to victory. The Royals' midfield, led by Schofield and supported by players like Tom Lindberg and Dylan Craven, took control to seal the 20-point win in front of a crowd of around 1100 fans.
Key Performers:
- East Perth: Mitchell Schofield (4 goals, 17 disposals), Tom Lindberg, Dylan Craven (3 goals), Sebit Kuek (2 goals), Tom North.
- Swan Districts: Zane Trew, Luke Kelly, Zach Provest (4 goals), Jack Turner, Corey Hinchliffe.
This result underscores East Perth's resilience and sets a positive tone for their 2026 WAFL campaign, while Swan Districts will look to build on their promising start despite the loss.
