Tanner Bruhn Set for AFL Return After False Rape Charges Dropped

Geelong Cats player Tanner Bruhn is poised to make his long-awaited return to the AFL field this Friday night, marking his first game in 17 months. Bruhn had been sidelined since the 2024 preliminary final after facing criminal charges of rape and intentional sexual touching, which were later dropped when the complainant admitted to lying.

Coach Chris Scott Speaks Out on Bruhn's Ordeal

Geelong coach Chris Scott expressed strong support for Bruhn, describing the situation as "one of the most egregious injustices I can think of in the game." Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Scott emphasized the importance of Bruhn moving forward and focusing on football. "It's just fantastic for him to get out there and be able to concentrate on footy after what is one of the most egregious injustices I can think of in the game," Scott said. "So to put that behind him, I think, is positive for everyone."

Scott was cautious about delving into the details of the support provided to Bruhn, noting it as a private matter. "I've said more than I wanted to anyway, it's largely a private matter and I don't want to draw any more attention to it than he would like," he explained. "I'd support him in all the ways that you would imagine but I don't want to walk you through it."

Bruhn's Journey Back to the Field

Bruhn, a 23-year-old with 66 AFL games to his name since debuting in 2021 at GWS before being traded to Geelong in 2022, has been preparing diligently for his comeback. During the pre-season, Scott trialed him at half-back instead of his usual midfield position, and Bruhn also participated in a practice game against Carlton. "It's his first game (back) but he's really been training and he played a practice game against Carlton, he's kind of ready to go," Scott remarked. "So I think we'll all look back and think this was a small step — it's important that we don't overplay it."

Team Updates for Geelong's Season Opener

In addition to Bruhn's return, Scott confirmed that key players Jeremy Cameron and Bailey Smith will feature in the away game against the Gold Coast Suns. Both have been managing thigh and calf injuries during the pre-season. Forward/ruck Shannon Neale is also set to play after recovering from a shin knock, but forward Gryan Miers remains in doubt due to a thumb injury. Scott highlighted the team's cautious approach, stating, "We don't have a very high tolerance for pushing guys that aren't ready." He added, "Gryan, it's one of those situations where 15 years ago he would be a certainty ... because it was a badge of honour playing with these things."

This match marks a significant moment for Bruhn and the Geelong Cats as they kick off their season, with the team aiming to balance player welfare and competitive performance.
