The Queensland Police Service has officially unveiled a permanent Polair helicopter fleet in Townsville, marking a significant enhancement to law enforcement capabilities across North Queensland. The new fleet, which will operate around the clock, is designed to provide aerial support for ground units, assisting in pursuits, searches, and crime prevention.
Enhanced Surveillance and Response
The Polair helicopters are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including high-definition cameras, thermal imaging, and advanced communication systems. This allows police to track suspects from the air, even in low-light conditions or challenging terrain. The permanent presence in Townsville means faster response times for incidents across the region, from the city centre to remote areas.
Community Safety Boost
Local authorities have welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its deterrent effect on criminal activity. The helicopters will also support emergency services during natural disasters, such as floods and bushfires, providing critical aerial assessments. Police Minister Mark Ryan stated, "This investment demonstrates our commitment to keeping Queenslanders safe. The Polair fleet will be a game-changer for policing in the north."
Residents can expect to see the helicopters conducting routine patrols and responding to incidents. The fleet includes two Airbus H145 helicopters, known for their reliability and versatility. Pilots and tactical flight officers have undergone specialized training to maximize the aircraft's capabilities.
Operational Details
The Polair base is located at Townsville Airport, with dedicated hangars and maintenance facilities. The fleet will operate 24/7, with crews on standby for immediate deployment. The helicopters can reach speeds of over 250 km/h and have a range of 600 kilometres, covering vast areas of North Queensland.
Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said, "This is a historic day for Queensland policing. The permanent Polair presence in Townsville will significantly enhance our ability to prevent and respond to crime, and ensure the safety of our communities."
The initiative is part of a broader $30 million investment in aerial policing across the state, including upgrades to existing Polair bases in Brisbane and Cairns. The Townsville fleet is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
