Will Brodie Set for AFL Comeback with Port Adelaide Debut

In a significant development for Australian Rules football, former Fremantle Docker Will Brodie is poised to make his long-awaited return to the AFL this weekend. After more than two years away from the top level, Brodie will debut for Port Adelaide in their upcoming match against West Coast on Sunday.

Journey from Fremantle to Port Adelaide

Brodie, aged 27, was traded to Port Adelaide last year for pick No. 103, despite having one year remaining on his contract with Fremantle. During his final two and a half seasons at the Dockers, he found himself consistently overshadowed by the team's highly regarded midfield group, which limited his opportunities at the AFL level.

Despite delivering standout performances for WAFL affiliate Peel Thunder, including contributing to their 2024 premiership victory, Brodie was unable to secure a spot back in Fremantle's lineup. This led him to request a move, seeking a fresh start and greater playing time.

Reuniting with Former Coach and Overcoming Challenges

The switch to Port Adelaide has reunited Brodie with Josh Carr, a former Fremantle midfielder who now serves as Port Adelaide's coach. Reflecting on his decision late last year, Brodie expressed his eagerness for new opportunities, stating, "It was a pretty tough midfield to get into at Freo, there are some studs in there, so I'm just going to keep trying to work, and I think I can get back to my best."

He added, "I was at the point where I was really craving some more opportunity, and I jumped at the chance for a fresh start. It's been a tough journey the last few years but I'm excited and motivated to give it another go."

Path to Selection and Recent Form

Brodie was initially overlooked for Port Adelaide's first two rounds of the 2026 season. However, injuries to key players Connor Rozee and Miles Bergman have opened the door for his return. His selection comes on the back of an impressive performance in the final pre-season SANFL match, where he scored three goals and helped secure a narrow victory over West Adelaide.

This comeback marks a pivotal moment in Brodie's career, as he aims to re-establish himself in the AFL after a challenging period. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how he integrates into Port Adelaide's lineup and contributes to their campaign against West Coast.
