Richmond Coach Adem Yze Urges Tigers to Ignore Carlton's Pressure Ahead of MCG Clash
Yze: Tigers Must Focus on Own Game, Not Carlton's Pressure

Richmond Coach Adem Yze Directs Tigers to Shut Out Carlton's Distractions Ahead of MCG Showdown

Richmond coach Adem Yze has firmly instructed his players to avoid fixating on how under-fire Carlton might respond to a tumultuous week in the headlines, as the Tigers aim to secure a Round 1 upset for the second consecutive season. The Blues' Opening Round capitulation to Sydney, highlighted by a disastrous third quarter, immediately placed Carlton and coach Michael Voss under intense scrutiny.

The pressure escalated with the leak of comments from retired former captain Sam Docherty, who privately labeled the Blues a "f****** s***show" in a rant about their game style following the Swans defeat. This assessment was sent in a private voice message to former teammate and content creator Daniel Gorringe, who aired it on social media without Docherty's knowledge, adding fuel to the fire.

Yze's Psychological Approach to the Game

Richmond, who will be without defender Nick Vlastuin due to fitness issues, is bracing for a beleaguered Carlton side expected to mount a fierce response in Thursday night's clash at the MCG. Yze emphasized the importance of mental focus, stating, "When you think about the psychology of the game, you're constantly reminding your players that you can't get drawn into reading too much about that."

He added, "If a team's under pressure, you know they're going to be coming out firing anyway, but they're going to come out firing no matter what, because they've just lost the game. We've got to worry about the way we start the game and the way we play."

Yze acknowledged the external noise surrounding Carlton but stressed that Richmond's priority should be internal improvement. "There'll be obviously some noise around them, but there's noise around them because they've played a game and we haven't. We reviewed the Melbourne pre-season game really clearly. We understood we weren't good enough in the first quarter, so we'll be going out to rectify those things in our game rather than worry about who we're playing."

Reflecting on Last Year's Comeback and Current Team Dynamics

When asked if Richmond would draw inspiration from last year's remarkable comeback victory, Yze responded, "Not really. It was an amazing game, but we were 41 points down. We've got to be really mindful that we didn't start the game the right way and ... we probably shouldn't have won it based on numbers."

He continued, "So there's some excitement around it. We understand that when if we do play our best footy we're a show, so we'll be thinking about the process, and not the result of last year."

On the injury front, Yze confirmed that Vlastuin won't be risked after a limited pre-season, but expressed confidence that the star defender will be ready for Round 2. "He just hasn't done enough. He's had his ankle and he had a bit of a grumbly back," Yze explained.

Key Players and Debutants for Richmond

Key defender Noah Balta is fit and prepared after off-field issues disrupted his 2025 season, while prized No.8 draft pick Sam Grlj is set to make his debut off half-back. Yze praised the 18-year-old, saying, "His will to win is next level. He's got some high talent and high speed when he's on offence. But at the same time he's fight to the death, and the way that he defends is the reason he's in the team."

Meanwhile, Carlton will be without running defender Adam Saad due to a hamstring injury, further complicating their preparations for the high-stakes match.
