Ian Botham: Stokes & Root Must Win in Australia to Become Cricket Legends
Botham: Stokes & Root Need Ashes Success in Australia

Cricket Greats Face Final Chance for Australian Glory

English cricket icon Ian Botham has delivered a stark message to modern stars Ben Stokes and Joe Root, declaring they must achieve success on Australian soil to secure their status as all-time greats. Both players, now aged 34, face what could be their final opportunity to conquer Australian conditions during the current Ashes series.

Impressive Records But Missing Key Achievement

Despite their remarkable careers, both Root and Stokes have significant gaps in their Australian records. Joe Root has failed to secure victory in 15 Test matches played in Australia, while captain Ben Stokes remains winless from 10 attempts. This stands in stark contrast to their overall achievements.

Root currently sits as the second highest run-scorer in Test history with 39 centuries to his name, while Stokes has led England to dual World Cup victories and delivered some of the most extraordinary individual performances in the country's cricketing history.

Botham's Direct Challenge to Current Squad

Botham, who celebrated his 70th birthday recently, knows exactly what it takes to succeed in Australia, having won eight Tests and two Ashes series during his swashbuckling all-rounder career. He minced no words in his assessment of England's recent performance in Perth, describing the two-day defeat as "horrendous."

"To be one of the very best you need to win in Australia, 100 percent," Botham told the PA news agency. "People remember you for what you've done over here. In Joe and Ben we've got two world-class players but they are desperate to make an impression here. You can only do that by winning."

The legendary all-rounder expressed particular frustration with England's current approach, stating: "I'm fed up of hearing, 'This is the way we play'. If I hear it once more, I think I'll throw something at the television. If that's the way you play, you might as well go home now because it's going to be 5-0."

Tactical Rethink Required

Botham suggested England need to adjust their tactics against Australia's formidable bowling attack. "Maybe we need to rethink our tactics. You're not going to smash these Australian bowlers around all the time," he advised. "Be selective, be sensible. Pull your horns in a little bit. When I did it I got myself in first."

He emphasized the special significance of winning in Australia, noting that "winning over here feels really, really good and it means absolute respect." Botham believes the desire to beat Australia alone should provide sufficient motivation for the English squad.

With four Tests remaining in the series, Botham remains hopeful England can turn their fortunes around, but stressed the urgency for improvement. "They've got four more Tests to get it right and let's hope they do because if they go down again, it's gone," he warned.
