Sheffield Shield Concludes with Nail-Biting Draw as Coaches Bow Out
The Sheffield Shield regular season ended in a tense draw between New South Wales and Western Australia at Cricket Central, with neither side able to send their departing coach off with a victory. The match went down to the final over, leaving both teams with mixed emotions after a hard-fought contest.
NSW's Late Push Falls Just Short
On Tuesday's fourth day, the Blues declared their second innings at 8-373, setting a target of 272 runs for Western Australia. Despite a late flurry of wickets, NSW narrowly ran out of time to bowl out their visitors, who finished at 9-139 in their second dig. The visitors were 134 runs shy of their target when Joel Davies bowled the final delivery of the season.
A draw seemed likely from the start of WA's second innings, as NSW needed 10 wickets in just two sessions after declaring at lunch. However, the Blues dared to dream when key batsmen Cameron Green and Sam Whiteman fell in consecutive overs just after tea, leaving WA at 4-78. Green, who had a tough Test summer, skied Davies to long-on with his first ball in the final session, unable to repeat his century from the first innings.
Dramatic Collapse and Missed Opportunities
Western Australia managed to steady the ship briefly, but Liam Hatcher broke through with the sixth wicket around 5.45pm when Joel Curtis edged to the slips. Hatcher's 43rd scalp made him the Shield's leading wicket-taker for the summer, and when Jhye Richardson fell two overs later, NSW had a real chance. WA were eight down as stand-in skipper Sean Abbott bowled Joel Paris and celebrated enthusiastically.
With shadows falling on the ground, NSW brought on spinners to complete the required overs. Davies bowled Cameron Gannon on the fourth-last ball of the day, but the final wicket proved elusive as the entire Blues team crowded around tailender Corey Rocchiccioli at the crease.
Season Standings and Coaching Changes
The draw, combined with Tasmania's earlier defeat of Queensland, meant NSW finished the season second-last on the ladder. For Western Australia, the result confirmed consecutive wooden spoons, as they had been firmly entrenched at the bottom of the table.
This match marked the end of Greg Shipperd's 11-year stint with Cricket NSW, which began when he joined the Sydney Sixers as head coach in 2015. He started coaching the Blues in an interim capacity in November 2022 before taking the post full-time in May 2023, but was unable to lead the powerhouse side to a Shield final during his tenure.
Similarly, back-to-back wooden spooners WA will see a coaching change next summer, with Adam Voges stepping down. He will be replaced by one-Test wonder and former assistant Beau Casson, signaling a new era for the team.
