Matt Frawley has revealed that a single tackle on Canberra Raiders star Elliott Whitehead was the turning point in his Leeds Rhinos career, ultimately leading to his nomination for the prestigious Man of Steel award.
The tackle that changed everything
Frawley, who joined Leeds from Canberra in 2021, struggled to make an impact in his first season. However, a crunching tackle on Whitehead during a pre-season friendly in 2022 changed his fortunes. The hit, which left Whitehead needing medical attention, showcased Frawley's defensive capabilities and earned him the respect of his teammates and coaching staff.
Speaking to media, Frawley said: "That tackle on Elliott was a turning point for me. I felt I had something to prove, and that moment gave me the confidence to play my natural game."
Rise to prominence
Following that tackle, Frawley's form improved dramatically. He became a regular starter for the Rhinos, contributing crucial tries and assists. His consistent performances throughout the season saw him named in the Super League Dream Team and shortlisted for the Man of Steel award, which recognizes the league's best player.
Leeds coach Rohan Smith praised Frawley's development: "Matt has worked incredibly hard. That tackle was a statement of intent, and he has built on it ever since."
Man of Steel nomination
The Man of Steel award is one of rugby league's highest individual honors. Frawley joins an elite list of nominees, including St Helens' Jack Welsby and Catalans Dragons' Sam Tomkins. The winner will be announced at the Super League awards ceremony later this month.
Frawley remains humble about his nomination: "It's an honor to be considered alongside such talented players. I couldn't have done it without my teammates and the support staff at Leeds."
The 27-year-old halfback has signed a new contract with Leeds, keeping him at the club until 2025. His journey from struggling import to Man of Steel contender is a testament to his resilience and determination.
