Trainer Baker Embraces Seven-Day Backup Strategy for Warwoven in Golden Slipper

While sending Warwoven into the Golden Slipper on a seven-day backup has never been the primary plan, trainer Bjorn Baker is increasingly optimistic about the challenge as rain is forecast for Sydney this weekend. The potential wet conditions at Rosehill could play to the colt's strengths, making his recent race fitness a significant advantage.

Historical Precedents and Current Odds

In recent years, two horses have won the prestigious juvenile race on a quick turnaround: Kiamichi in 2019 and Shinzo three years ago. Should the track become heavy on Saturday, Warwoven's condition might tip the scales in his favor. As of Wednesday, the colt was priced at $7, drawing barrier 14. Meanwhile, stablemate Paradoxium, once the pre-draw equal favorite, has eased to $8 after being assigned gate 18.

Baker believes both colts are still improving and points to their resilience during interrupted Magic Millions campaigns in Queensland as evidence of their toughness. "Both colts have got a great constitution and very good attitudes, so that gives you a bit of encouragement," Baker said. "They've both been on the way up, so if anything, the back-up could work to our advantage, especially if there is a little bit of rain around and the track does get demanding. Maybe that would tip me towards Warwoven."

Jockey and Equipment Changes

Rachel King will partner with Warwoven, and a victory would make her the first female jockey to win the world's richest juvenile race. To bolster his chances, Warwoven will wear blinkers for the first time in competition. Baker expressed confidence in this move, noting, "He has worked in them previously and has gone very well so we thought, Saturday is the day to do it."

He acknowledged the risk but highlighted the flexibility it offers: "It's a bit of a risky move, but he's drawn out a touch. We've got the option to go forward or take a sit. Rachel knows him very well, so we'll figure that out."

Challenges for Paradoxium and Historical Trends

Paradoxium faces a tougher task from the wide barrier, but Baker remains focused on strategy. "No doubt, the gate, he is going to have to overcome that," he said. "He's just going to need a little bit of luck from out wide and make sure we get our tactics spot-on. But the main thing is we are here, and he is in good shape and healthy."

Historically, wide draws have not been a barrier to success in the Golden Slipper. Seven of the past 15 winners have started from barrier eight or wider, with six of those jumping from double-figure alleys.

Other Runners with Gear Adjustments

Waron Saturday, two other runners will undergo significant gear changes. Trainer Chris Waller has decided to equip Fireball with blinkers for the first time, while removing them from stablemate Hidrix after the colt failed to respond as hoped in the Todman Stakes (1200m). These adjustments add an extra layer of intrigue to an already competitive field.
