Dubbo Racing Preview: Kranich Leads Country Championships Qualifier Charge

Form analyst Shayne O'Cass provides his comprehensive best bets and detailed race-by-race analysis for the Dubbo race meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026. The highlight of the program is undoubtedly the WRA Country Championships Qualifier, where Kranich emerges as the standout contender despite some barrier concerns.

Kranich Primed for Country Championships Glory

Former multiple Adelaide Premiership winning jockey Chad Lever expresses strong confidence in Kranich's ability to overcome his rivals in the WRA Country Championships Qualifier, provided his barrier position doesn't prove detrimental. The Port Augusta born hoop, who served his apprenticeship under Hall Of Famer Leon Macdonald, has developed a mutually beneficial partnership with Kranich, who currently stands as the $4.40 TAB Fixed Odds equal favourite for the 1400-meter feature event.

Lever's record aboard the Mick Mulholland-trained bay gelding is particularly impressive, with four rides resulting in one victory and three placings, including a narrow second-place finish in this year's Dubbo Cup Prelude. The now Hawkesbury-based jockey has been closely involved with both horse and trainer throughout the majority of the Qualifier preparation, witnessing three first-class efforts over distances that were fractionally unsuitable.

Lever concurs with market assessments that everything appears to be progressing perfectly for Kranich in the lead-up to the Qualifier, with the notable exception of the barrier draw. For the record, Kranich drew barrier 13 out of 14, though this will improve by at least one position following the scratching of Wasted Days.

"There's a fair bit of a run to the first corner so it's not too bad, it's just going to be a matter of where we are going to get," Lever explained. "There should be good speed so hopefully we can land midfield somewhere or thereabouts with a little bit of cover. He's pretty adaptable but it would have been nicer if we had drawn that little bit closer to make it that little bit easier."

Kranich's Remarkable Journey

Kranich began his racing career as a Victorian resident under the guidance of Greg Eurell, the trainer responsible for 2011 Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker. The son of Hallowed Crown's brief stint in the southern state comprised three starts resulting in two third-place finishes and one fourth, all conducted in country locations.

The bay gelding next appeared as one of the lots at the 2024 Inglis Digital sale, where he was purchased for $7,000. Since that acquisition, Kranich has accumulated close to $150,000 in prize money for his new connections, including trainer Mick Mulholland, with the potential for a tilt at the $1 million Country Championships Final purse at Randwick on April 4 if he manages to finish first or second this weekend.

Kranich has already made the 800-kilometer round trip to Sydney on two occasions, finishing a neck second in a TAB Highway event at Randwick before securing victory in one of the country-only features at Rosehill on August 16, 2025.

"He should be spot-on now that he's had the three runs back so I am quite looking forward to Sunday," Lever stated with optimism. "He always has a go and tries. If he gets the right amount of luck, he will be there for sure."

Additional Riding Engagements for Lever

Mulholland has entrusted Lever with a second riding engagement aboard the lightly-raced Narmer, who is pressing for favouritism in the Martin Collins Australia Maiden Showcase over 1400 meters. A son of US Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Narmer appears ready to break through for his maiden victory this weekend following two fourth-place finishes to commence his career.

"This is going to be his third run and you'd think that he will probably improve again and be a hundred per cent ready to go," Lever commented. "Once again the barrier is not going to help us much because he does go forward in his races but hopefully, we can get the right run and give him his chance."

Meanwhile, Lever will combine with astute Hawkesbury trainer Terry Croft in the opening event on the card, the Wellington Boot Prelude for aspiring two-year-olds over 1100 meters. Lever's mount is I'm A Beaut, the ninth foal of Lonhro mare Katism, whose previous offspring include Hong Kong Classic Mile winner Nothinglikemore.

Croft's $12,000 Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale purchase has trialed keenly ahead of his journey west, placing in each of his two heats, one of them behind Wednesday's Warwick Farm winner Satono Glow.

"Both of his trials have looked pretty good on paper," Lever observed. "I like the way he hit the line in the first trial and then in the second trial, he began a lot better and was right there on the speed and went down to the line pretty comfortable."

Inside Mail - Dubbo Race-by-Race Analysis

Race 1: Elite Sand And Soil Boot Prelude - 2YO Handicap 1100m

I'M A BEAUTY (7) trialed twice and performed well on each occasion. Her trials were conducted at provincial level, indicating a depth factor. The horse that won her Hawkesbury Heat was Satono Glow, who subsequently won at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. SIMPLY SONNET (8) is the first foal of the 2021 Wellington Boot winner Sonnet Star. Damien Lane has likely set this filly specifically for this event and the upcoming Boot.

Bet: I'm A Beauty to win, exacta 7, 8

Race 2: The Castlereagh Hotel Class 1 & Maiden Showcase Plate 1600m

THE BENTLEY (5) has recorded '2341' in his four runs for Connie Greig, maintaining consistency with one win and seven placings overall from 17 starts, speaking volumes for his reliability. MAXIMUM RIDE (2) was a dual acceptor but barrier 1 in this race proved too good to refuse. DARK THINKER (7) performs at his most effective over a mile distance.

Bet: The Bentley to win, quinella 2, 5; trifecta 1, 2, 5, 7 (boxed)

Race 3: Martin Collins Australia Country Boosted Maiden Showcase Plate 1400m

NARMER (5) has shown considerable promise in his only two starts and would likely be close to a certainty if not for his unfavorable barrier position. He benefits from an excellent jockey booking, though the gate has brought him back to the field somewhat. FORTIANS (2), NIGHTWALKER (6), and CASTRO (1) represent a trio of consistent performers, albeit with numerous previous opportunities (excluding Castro).

Bet: Narmer to win

Race 4: Dubbo City & Gilgandra Toyota Benchmark 66 Showcase Handicap 1600m

SIPPING SHAMUS (3) boasts two wins, two seconds, and one third from six starts. He clearly wasn't himself when finishing last on another occasion. He possesses significant tactical speed, suggesting he will likely lead from barrier 2 and should handle the mile distance comfortably. CROWN LEGEND (4) has experienced unfortunate barrier luck this preparation but has performed quite well each time, suggesting barrier 11 of 12 may not prove decisive.

Bet: Sipping Shamus to win, quinella 3, 4

Race 5: Arrowfield 3YO & Up Showcase Super Maiden Plate 1100m

SUNDAY LEMONADE (14) was solid around the $9 mark when making her debut in a 1000-meter maiden at Dubbo on September 28, where she ran an honorable fifth of ten, beaten three-and-a-half lengths by a handy horse. She returns from a spell, resumes from a favorable barrier, and competes at her home track. Mack Griffith excels with tried horses, and HANUMAN (1) arrives at Mudgee with good Victorian form.

Bet: Sunday Lemonade each-way

Race 6: XXXX Class 1 Showcase Handicap 1200m

FEARED (2) represents another example of Mack Griffith's expertise with tried horses. Originally trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, he won his first and only start for Griffith in a Super Maiden at Tamworth on February 13. This race has become considerably easier for him and others with Heta's withdrawal. BOUNDING BON (1) has reached the podium in eight of his twelve starts, with two wins and one third from five runs at Dubbo.

Bet: Feared to win, quinella 1, 2

Race 7: Evergreen Turf WRA Country Championships Qualifier 1400m

KRANICH (2) has recorded four wins and seven placings from fifteen starts. He is trained locally at Dubbo, where his current personal best was a narrow second in the Cup Prelude. He traveled to Sydney six days later and won a Highway event. His preparation couldn't have proceeded more smoothly, though the barrier could have been more favorable. Regarding preparations, Clint Lundholm has timed BRUTAL LOVE's (1) Qualifier quest perfectly.

Bet: Kranich to win, quinella 1, 2; trifecta 1, 2, 11, 13; DD 1st Leg 2, 2nd Leg 10

Race 8: GM Specialty Vehicles Dubbo Benchmark 58 Showcase Handicap 1400m

FULL COMMITMENT (11) stands out if he runs, though he has drawn very wide, similar to Armidale on Friday when he was scratched. No such issues for SIDENAY (5), who has drawn the pole position. Interestingly, the last time this occurred, he led and won at Tamworth, recording '1' and '3' in his two subsequent starts. MRS BULL (2) represents one of many consistent, reliable, and well-placed gallopers housed by Connie Greig.

Bet: Full Commitment each-way or if scratched Sidenay to win

Race 9: Inland Petroleum Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Showcase Handicap 1100m

KOBOLD (10) was essentially a non-starter when he failed to finish at Dubbo on February 2. This was particularly unfortunate as he was considered a strong chance and was specked from $11 into $8. He has been entered for at least one meeting, possibly two, that were subsequently abandoned. He possesses talent, though his barrier draw may not prove particularly helpful. Assuming a fast pace here, Kobold and GREEN PINEAPPLE (7) are among those who could finish strongly late and over the top.

Bet: Kobold and Green Pineapple each-way, quinella 7, 10; trifecta 2, 4, 7, 10
