Supercars CEO James Warburton Departs Immediately in Shock Exit

In a stunning development for Australian motorsport, Supercars CEO James Warburton has left the organisation effective immediately. The shock departure was officially confirmed on Thursday morning, sending ripples through the racing community as the season has completed just two rounds.

Mutual Agreement Reached for Organisational Benefit

Supercars management stated that the decision was reached by mutual agreement and is considered to be in the best interests of the organisation as it enters what they describe as the next phase of development. This unexpected exit comes less than twelve months after Warburton returned to the role for his second stint at the helm, having previously held the position between 2013 and 2017.

In a statement released following the announcement, Warburton expressed pride in the organisation's achievements during his tenure. "Supercars is a strong organisation with committed staff, passionate teams and partners, and significant opportunity ahead," he said. "I'm proud of what the team has achieved and the momentum that we have built for the sport in a short period of time. I wish the RACE Board, our staff and the broader Supercars community every future success for this great sport."

Interim Leadership and Search for Successor

Barclay Nettlefold, Chair of RACE, has assumed interim executive oversight of the business with the executive leadership team now reporting directly to him. The board will immediately commence a formal process to appoint a new permanent CEO to lead the organisation forward.

Nettlefold acknowledged Warburton's contributions in an official statement, saying, "On behalf of the board, I want to sincerely thank James Warburton for his leadership and contribution to Supercars. James brought deep experience, energy and commitment to the role, and his return to the business was driven by a genuine belief in the sport and its future. We are grateful for the work he has done over the last year and wish him every success in his next endeavour."

The RACE Chair emphasized that "as a board, we remain focused on maintaining momentum and execution as the organisation moves forward" during this transitional period.

Season Continues Amid Leadership Change

The Supercars season is currently in the middle of a five-week break before competition resumes with a double-header event in New Zealand. Races are scheduled to take place in Taupo and Christchurch beginning next weekend, providing the first major test for the organisation under its new interim leadership structure.

This leadership change occurs at a critical juncture for Supercars as the organisation navigates the current racing season while planning for future growth and development opportunities within the competitive motorsport landscape.
