West Coast Fever's Promising Start Fades in Heavy Defeat to Adelaide Thunderbirds
In a dramatic Super Netball clash, the West Coast Fever let slip an early advantage, ultimately suffering a 13-goal defeat to the formidable Adelaide Thunderbirds. The match, held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Saturday night, saw the Fever's initial momentum evaporate as they fell 66-53, leaving them to rue missed opportunities and costly errors.
Van der Berg Shines as Thunderbirds Seize Control
Adelaide's star shooter, Elmere van der Berg, delivered another masterclass performance, equalling her club record with an impressive 59 goals. Her accuracy and dominance under the post were pivotal, as she capitalized on the Fever's defensive lapses. Van der Berg was ably supported by Georgie Horjus, who contributed 37 goal assists and 48 feeds, ensuring a fluid attacking display for the Thunderbirds.
Fever's Shooting Struggles Prove Costly
In stark contrast, the West Coast Fever's shooting duo of Romelda Aiken-George and Sasha Glasgow struggled to find their rhythm. Aiken-George managed only 29 goals from 37 attempts, while Glasgow scored 22 goals, with both players missing routine shots that would typically be expected to convert. This inefficiency was compounded by an uncharacteristic 19 general play turnovers, compared to Adelaide's mere seven, highlighting the Fever's disjointed performance.
Defensive Pressure and Tactical Shifts
The Thunderbirds' defensive pairing of Shamera Sterling-Humphrey and Latanya Wilson exerted significant pressure, disrupting the Fever's offensive flow. Sterling-Humphrey recorded six deflections and 10 gains, while Wilson added four gains and four deflections, forcing the Fever into numerous errors. In response, Fever coach Dan Ryan attempted tactical adjustments, including benching captain Jess Anstiss and introducing Caitlyn Brown for extra height, but these changes failed to stem the tide as Adelaide surged ahead.
Second-Half Collapse and Debut Highlights
As the game progressed, the Fever's unforced errors mounted, allowing the Thunderbirds to extend their lead. Aiken-George was benched twice in the latter stages, with training partner Sloan Burton making her debut, following in the footsteps of her mother, former Perth Orioles co-captain Julie-Ann Burton. Glasgow showed some resilience after halftime, scoring five of her six super goals to prevent the margin from widening further, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.
Looking Ahead for the Fever
This loss marks a disappointing start to the season for the West Coast Fever, who will now aim to rebound in their upcoming match against the Giants at RAC Arena next Sunday. The team must address their shooting accuracy and turnover issues to compete against top-tier opponents like the Thunderbirds, who have firmly established themselves as early premiership contenders with this commanding victory.
